Paradoxically, companies that stock steel always have too much steel and not enough steel concurrently. How? Steel comes in a variety of specifications. Buyers have to select their preferred thickness, width, grade, treatment, coating, etc., and buy from steel mills weeks or months in advance in very large order sizes. They have to guess—months in advance—how much of each specification they will need. Invariably, they buy too much of one specification and too little of another. When they buy too little, they must either place another massive order and wait weeks or months for it to arrive or try to find the material at a stocking distributor’s facility at higher prices. When they buy too much, they have little recourse but to sell the excess material as scrap at around 10% of what they paid for it.
