Powerhive believes that microgrids are going to be a large part of the solution for energy access in emerging markets. Given that electric utilities have been operating for over a century, one might think that the products and technologies necessary to implement microgrids in emerging markets are already in place. While it is true that the basic technology does exist, microgrids, and especially those deployed in emerging markets, have a unique set of requirements that do not overlap well with those of a traditional utility.

We develop a technology platform that enables the financing and monetization of distributed microgrids, and enables consumers to pre-pay for their electricity from their mobile phones, effectively bringing affordable electricity services to emerging markets. Our approach delivers sufficient electricity for productive loads, enabling not just ‘lights and a phone charger’, but also income generating appliances like a sewing machine or refrigerator
