An estimated 17 million people die in a year due to cardiovascular disease (WHO). According to the Heart Foundation, almost 1 million Americans will have a heart attack in 2014; nearly half of them will occur without prior symptoms or warning signs. Many people, including people who have had previous heart attacks or those with diabetes, may have ischemic episodes (silent ischemia) without pain and knowing it. They may have a heart attack with no prior warning. At present, there is no point-of-care test to detect these early or silent signs of a heart attack. The company will develop a point-of-care test for the detection of early or hidden signs of a heart attack using ischemia markers that appears within 6 min in the blood after the onset of symptoms. Ischemia is an early symptom of a heart attack. The company's test will reduce sudden deaths, help triaging of patients brought into the ER and reduce health care costs associated with unnecessary hospitalization/treatment procedures.
