OcuSciences is a medical diagnostic device company developing a rapid, non-invasive retinal imaging technique. The technique, termed Retinal Metabolic Analysis (RMA), is being developed to detect retinal diseases, such as diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and glaucoma, earlier than current clinical methods. Currently, ophthalmologists and optometrists use structural measures (such as optical coherence tomography) or rudimentary functional measures (e.g. visual acuity) to assess the degree of complex retinal diseases. We have created a retinal imager that, in a five-minute test, provides an image that can assess the metabolic state of retinal tissue by quantifying mitochondrial dysfunction. Therefore, before damage is done (i.e. retinal thinning as assessed by OCT), we provide a measure of tissue damage to aid clinicians in disease progression and effect of therapy.
