There are 400 million people worldwide who use walkers, canes, crutches, and other assistive devices, but 60% say that they have major problems using them. Problems range from improper device use to falls, with 47,000 Americans ending up in emergency rooms every year because they have fallen while using a walker or cane. We're building a sensor package that users can attach to their canes, walkers, and other assistive devices to promote safe, independent mobility. The device senses the environment to warn the users of hazards, and the user's gait to promote safe, correct device use. Core parts of the tech rely on (anonymized) user data, which makes our technology highly defensible once we have users. We've built a prototype, tested with 12 users, and published a paper in Science, supported by the Stanford Intelligent Systems Lab. Though we're "medical device-adjacent," we won't initially require FDA approval. Our devices can be sold at 80-90% margins, and can be reimbursed (initially) by senior care centers, Centers for Independent Living, and other nonprofit and government institutions. Later, we'll also pursue reimbursement through medical insurance, though it isn't necessary for us to sell to our first customers. We have a letter of intent from a distributor to purchase 1000 units.
