Modern medicine is undergoing a transformation from a one-size-fits-all approach of treatment (e.g. traditional small molecule drugs in the form of pills and capsules) to more personalized curative therapies that focus on the discovery and development of molecularly targeted drugs (e.g. cell and gene therapies). Such advanced curative treatments involve repairing the patient's defective genetic machinery at the cellular level for every individual patient. This kind of bespoke therapies using genetically engineered cells as the drug are increasingly being used to tackle different diseases, primarily genetic disorders such as cancers, cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy and so on. One major obstacle in advancing these curative therapies lies in the complex, onerous and severely expensive manufacturing process of disabled viruses that are used to transport molecules (genes, proteins etcetera) into cells that lack them. Mekonos is developing a chip technology to exponentially simplify the manufacturing of such genetically modified cells in the pursuit of making such advanced therapies affordable and universally accessible. The team consists of Stanford and Berkeley educated engineers and scientists.
