Marktschwärmer (The Food Assembly) is part of a network which was started in France in 2011 under the name La Ruche qui dit Oui!. Today the network has over 1100 communities across Europe (in France, Belgium, UK, Germany, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Netherlands and Denmark) and connects over 150,000 customers with 10,000 local producers and farmers. Marktschwärmer is both a web start-up and social enterprise. We define ourselves as part of the collaborative economy with a social component. We're creating a more equitable, community-driven food economy, by cutting the middleman out and empowering farmers to sell their products directly through our platform. For consumers, it’s access to fresh, seasonal foods all grown or produced regionally. For farmers and food producers, it’s a bigger cut for their labor, as over 80 percent of the price paid by members goes straight to them — a far higher percentage than they receive from supermarkets. The remainder goes to the host and to Marktschwärmer itself, to maintain the web platform, provide support, and expand the network.
