Employability is a massive problem in India. Yet, if you look to see EdTech solutions around, they only cater to a very narrow set of career paths – engineering (particularly software engineering), government jobs, and standardized tests (e.g. GMAT, GATE, etc.). In some ways, all that EdTech has done in the country is to digitize the career-management thought process that made sense pre-liberalization but is abundantly out of touch with the world we live in. It is painful to acknowledge that as a society, we write off a very large part of our potential workforce even before they start their careers – millions who graduate with degrees such as BA, BSc, BCom from universities up and down the country hardly have any skills which make them relevant to a modern employer. Consequently, they live lives of unfulfilled hopes and shattered dreams. This problem is even more acute for those who come from tier-2 and tier-3 cities – they grow up completely disconnected from the modern professional world and often do not have any role models in family to look up to or to guide them. Generally, these graduates start to look for a job towards the end of their third year of graduation. When they embark on their search, they lack a clear strategy or coherent guidance. As disappointments come their way, they panic and end up spending time and money on expensive courses which they may not benefit from (e.g. a diploma in programming). After some time, they either give up or settle for a job where they are underemployed. This need not happen. There’s a way to address this problem – if only we get hold of graduates early on and teach them job-oriented skills which are in demand by employers of today.
