Haystack is building a searchable marketplace for inventory across all local stores. Our innovative data approach allows us to cover local stores alongside big box chains, creating the first holistic, full coverage product/inventory search. Over 50 millions local product searches are made in the U.S. each month, and Haystack is helping small retailers connect with those potential customers, powering more sales, local delivery and pickup, and more efficient pricing and product inventory. Long-term vision: a distributed network of retail stores (functioning partly as fulfillment centers) can outcompete Amazon on efficiency and price in last-mile delivery, and allow brick-and-mortar retail to flip the model on Amazon. Team: Co-founder Benjamin Dean was the Chief Analyst of NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s Office of Data Analytics, and is an expert in modeling disparate location based datasets, which he used to predict catastrophic events (fire, building collapse, etc.), prioritize agency inspection resources (FDNY, Department of Buildings, NYPD, etc.), and build the master database for coordinating and prioritizing Hurricane Sandy relief efforts for New York City. Co-founder Rohit Gupta is a web and iOS developer who previously worked at Citadel Investment Group creating prediction engines for energy markets. They met at Wharton Business School where they both received their MBAs.
