femtoScale is a Denver based company developing products to measure airborne particulates. Airborne particles that you can barely even see have been associated with a wide range of health effects, from pnuemencosis to heart disease, diabetes, cancer and even autism. Studies have shown that in the U.S. alone 150,000 deaths a year can be attributed to these particles. Other researchers have suggested that the reduction of merely 1 microgram of these particles in each cubic meter of air could prevent 34,000 deaths a year. Of course various regulatory agencies in the USA, such as the EPA and NIOSH have set limits for particulate exposure. In order to verify that these limits are being met, and even improved on a higher standard of monitoring is necessary. femtoScale is developing a product in order to help researchers and the general public better understand the air they breathe every day, and with that information become better informed of how to protect their health and wellness.
