The new generation of robots is unplugging from the wall and unbolting from the ground to provide unprecedented manufacturing flexibility and functionality in environments in and outside the factory. However, when robots need to move around the real world and operate on batteries, the high weight and power consumption of hardware become the central obstacles to achieving effective human-safe operation. As a result, mobile robots require incredibly expensive and specialized components, and still struggle to safely perform simple tasks. We are solving this problem by pioneering electroadhesive clutch hardware that is 10x lighter and uses 1000x power than conventional components. With access to clutch components that impose virtually no added weight and power, robotics engineers can create actuator designs that use smart transmissions to improve performance and reduce the need for expensive hard-to-work-with components like strain wave gears.
