The Digital Freight Matching industry was invented in 2004.
Technology devices were not ready to support mass adoption and in 2008-2009, most of these companies who were experimenting with Digital Freight Matching, pivoted to more traditional models of brokerage. In 2015, the adoption cycle for DFMs started again, this time led by ELD - Electronic Log Devices, and personal data assistants or today called 'smart phone' adoption.
Massive amounts of data are now available from carriers and shippers want that data to gain visibility and track and trace their shipments for their customers.
Digital Freight Matching (DFM) companies and Transportation Management Systems now, clearly see the capability to make digital matches with vehicles equipped with a GPS and handheld device.
In 2021, there are over 300 of these marketplaces for Shippers and Carriers to transact business.
The problem is that each of these marketplaces are trying to get carriers and shippers to use their platform, but they do not use one platform exclusively.
Shippers put the same load on numerous platforms to find trucks and carriers put their truck on several to find loads. This Multi-posting of transport orders and capacity is specifically called out in the invention as something that can be solved with reliable and predictable data from known parties.
DFM Data secured an exclusive license to the patent with Sub Licensing rights to companies practicing the invention. DFM Data is the communication and clearing house for replicated data between DFM Providers to eliminate friction in the digital transportation transaction process.
