Fewer than half of all students who enter college intending to major in a STEM field will complete a STEM degree. Students from historically underserved groups—first-generation college attendees, students from racial and ethnic minorities, and students from low-income families—leave STEM at much higher rates than their majority peers. The situation has only worsened with the COVID-19 pandemic, which has caused enrollments to plummet, especially for first-year students in under-resourced communities. We believe this exodus is partly because most students do not enter college with strong metacognition and self-regulated learning skills and do not have the support to learn these behaviors before leaving STEM. In large gateway classes, many of which are now taught online or in hybrid formats, it's impossible for instructors to help a majority of students to develop self-regulated learning skills without the support of a digital platform like ours. Our student app uses personal learning data and gamification techniques to help students gauge their understanding and remediate learning gaps using evidence-based study strategies.
