We are creating a solution to cost effectively destroy toxic per-and polyfluoro alkyl substances (PFAS) in drinking water. Our solution is scalable and directly integrable into existing water utility systems without the high liability waste streams created by other technologies.
Competing industrial-scale technologies merely filter out and concentrate PFAS into a new high-liability waste stream. We aim to create a photo-catalytic system that safely breaks down PFAS to non-toxic carbon dioxide and fluorine ions, hence permanently solving the problem permanently. Other destructive technologies use more energy than ours, thus affording us lower operating expenses. Furthermore, our technology is unique in its reactor design’s scalability.
We are working on a critical global problem that currently does not have readily available solutions. PFAS are estimated to be in 97% of Americans’ bloodstreams, and are likely to have affected a similarly high percentage globally. PFAS never break down in nature, spread in the environment easily, and accumulate over time within animals that ingest them via drinking water. Unfortunately, we are now finding links to serious health impacts from these compounds ranging from high cholesterol to developmental issues to adverse effects on the immune system and cancer. While we do not have a good estimate of the current cost to the American healthcare system, the Nordic Council recently estimated that these chemicals are causing increased healthcare costs in Europe of about €50 - €80 billion annually. Our aim is to solve this problem permanently and safely by destroying PFAS photocatalytically, thus improving the health of people and the environment everywhere in the process.
