Since our founding in 2018 by Jun Kamei, now CEO, we have used the same recyclable source material for every innovation, pushing it to the max to create garments, gills and more. Through an investigation into artificial gill technology for human life underwater in reaction to rising sea levels, Jun applied his background in material science to finding the perfect hydrophobic and breathable polymer. At the same time, the outdoor textile industry has grown reliant on layered structures of different polymers to make waterproof and breathable textiles that are almost exclusively non-recyclable with water-repellent coatings that wash off, causing 5000 tonnes annually of PFAS (a toxic forever chemical used by 80% of the industry) to bioaccumulate in the environment. This material revelation led Jun to build a sustainability-motivated team to commercialise our lead product Amphitex™ whilst Amphigill™ remains ongoing, both projects now exist symbiotically within Amphico. Amphitex™ is set to challenge the very fibre of the marketplace and provide a solution that meets new anti-PFAS regulations (coming in 2024) and the needs of eco-conscious outdoor consumers.
