About Cumulus
Cumulus is a Quality Management System (QMS) that ensures critical construction and maintenance activities are done right the first time, every time. By integrating AI-powered workflows and connected IoT devices, the Cumulus QMS improves the productivity and quality of critical work, such as bolt tightening, pressure testing, welding, and non-destructive examination.
To date, Cumulus has been used to manage over 15,000,000 work completions across industries such as energy, construction, manufacturing, semiconductors, data centers, transportation, chemicals, renewables, and more. In addition to improving safety and sustainability, our technology has been proven to reduce quality-related costs by 60%.
Cumulus’s transformative technology has been widely recognized in the industry, including the following awards and honors:
· 2023 BuiltWorlds Americas Summit Demo Day Winner for Cumulus AI
· 2022 BuiltWorlds Maverick Awards winner for Cumulus CEO Matthew Kleiman
· 2021 BuiltWorlds Smart Jobsites 50 Leader List
· 2020 IoT Breakthrough "IoT Startup of the Year" award
· 2019 CNBC Upstart 100 list
Role Overview
The Full Stack Developer (Software Level 2) joins one of Cumulus's cross-functional Scrum teams and takes end-to-end ownership of features across the product stack. This is a back-end-leaning role: you will spend the majority of your time in the service layer, designing and building APIs, data models, and cloud infrastructure that power both the web and mobile applications. You will also work across the full stack, with enough React and React Native fluency to collaborate effectively with front-end developers and deliver complete, shippable features.
At Software Level 2, Cumulus expects you to operate autonomously on features, translate loosely defined problems into well-scoped solutions, write technical specs, and actively support the growth of engineers around you. This is not a ticket-execution role. You own the design, the delivery, the tests, and the feedback loop.
The Cumulus platform is built on a modern serverless architecture: Node.js and TypeScript, GraphQL (AWS AppSync), DynamoDB, AWS Lambda, and S3, with a React and React Native front end. Field data from BLE-connected industrial measurement tools flows through the platform in real time. You will work at the intersection of reliability, data integrity, and product experience.
Responsibilities
Backend and Service Development
· Design and build GraphQL resolvers, Lambda functions, and DynamoDB data models that serve both the web Control Center and the React Native mobile application.
· Own back-end features end to end: schema design, business logic, data access patterns, and deployment through the CI/CD pipeline.
· Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks in resolvers, event-driven pipelines, and data-intensive queries.
· Write unit and integration tests covering the critical paths of every feature you ship.
· Understand and apply the organization's quality practices and CI/CD standards; ensure your work meets Definition-of-Done gates before merging.
Full Stack Feature Delivery
· Deliver complete product features across the stack, including front-end changes in React and React Native where needed to close the loop on a feature.
· Translate loosely defined requirements from Product Owners and designers into clear technical plans before implementation begins.
· Break down epics into well-scoped sprint tasks with explicit acceptance criteria and surface scope risks early.
· Own entire features during a sprint, from kick-off through review, demo, and merge.
· Participate actively in sprint planning, daily standups, sprint reviews, and retrospectives.
Technical Quality and Standards
· Write technical specs for new features and non-trivial changes before beginning implementation.
· Conduct thorough code reviews: check for correctness, test coverage, readability, and adherence to team standards and best practices.
· Identify technical debt proactively and propose targeted improvements rather than accumulating workarounds sprint by sprint.
· Discuss the high-level trade-offs of alternative implementations during design discussions and offer clear technical recommendations.
· Designs scalable, maintainable solutions that account for future growth in data volume, concurrent users, and feature surface area.
Collaboration and Cross-functional Partnership
· Collaborate closely with Product Owners and designers to clarify requirements and negotiate scope before a sprint begins.
· Communicate proactively and clearly across async channels so the team is never blocked waiting on your input or a handoff.
· Partner with the embedded QA engineer on your squad by writing testable code and participating in test planning.
· Engage with customer use cases: understand the real-world conditions under which field workers use Cumulus, and let that context inform your technical decisions.
Mentorship and Team Contribution
· Provide constructive, substantive code review feedback to less experienced engineers, helping them understand team standards rather than just flagging issues.
· Share context, documentation, and solutions in ways that make the team more capable, not just the immediate task done.
· Demonstrate initiative: bring a proposed solution when you raise a problem, and take ownership of gaps rather than escalating every ambiguity.
· Exhibit Cumulus's core values and engineering principles in day-to-day work and team interactions.
About you
You are a software engineer who has outgrown ticket execution and is ready to own features end to end. You have strong back-end instincts and enjoy designing systems that are clean, performant, and maintainable. You are comfortable with ambiguity, and your first move when handed a vague problem is to sharpen the definition before you write a line of code.
· Autonomous and self-directed: you deliver features without needing to be told how to approach them.
· Back-end-first, but full stack capable: you are most at home in the service layer, and you are fluent enough across the stack to ship complete features.
· Writes clear technical specs and reviews PRs with the kind of feedback that actually makes the code and the reviewer better.
· Collaborative in a team setting: you work closely with product, design, and QA, and you communicate early when scope or timing is at risk.
· A natural mentor to less experienced engineers, not because it is in the job description, but because you find it useful to invest in the people around you.
· Demonstrates a growth mindset and initiative through continuous learning.
Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent professional experience.
Experience: Minimum of 3 years of professional software development experience, with demonstrated ownership of back-end features or services in a production environment.
Technical Expertise:
· Strong proficiency in Node.js and TypeScript, with practical experience designing and building REST or GraphQL APIs.
· Hands-on experience with AWS services, particularly DynamoDB, Lambda, AppSync, S3, and IAM.
· Solid understanding of data modeling, query optimization, and event-driven architectures at scale.
· Experience writing and maintaining automated tests (unit and integration) as part of a CI/CD workflow.
· Working knowledge of React or React Native is a plus; front-end fluency is valued though not required as a primary strength.
· Familiarity with GitHub, code review workflows, and agile sprint tooling.
Location: This role is based at our office in Auburndale/Newton, Massachusetts. We operate on a hybrid schedule with regular on-site collaboration days. Please apply by submitting a cover letter and resume to [email protected].
