Interim CFO Support Lead

About the role
Wexus Win Works is putting together a team to provide interim finance leadership to a large North Carolina public school district while it hires a permanent CFO. You’ll keep the finance office running smoothly, guide the finance team, and keep the district’s financial reporting accurate and on time.
What you’ll do
Lead the weekly finance executive meeting and hold weekly one-on-ones with 7 finance leaders
Run the Monthly Management Review: review about 16 financial reports, question variances, and make sure corrections are done before statements go to the Board
Meet weekly with the Acting Superintendent on financial status, budget pressures and upcoming decisions
Hold a daily 30-minute office-hours window for finance staff
Support the FY 2027-28 budget, allotments and leveling, and the remaining financial statement audit work, including the statistical section
Keep a finance calendar and action log so deadlines and follow-ups are tracked
Help with hiring and onboarding the permanent finance leaders
What you need
Active CPA license (required)
10+ years of senior finance leadership in government, ideally as a CFO, Deputy CFO or Finance Director of a school district or large public entity
Strong working knowledge of governmental accounting (GASB), budgeting, internal controls and audits
Experience presenting financial information to senior leaders
Able to work on site in Charlotte, NC one full day every other week, plus the monthly review day
Eligible to work in the US, with a clean background check
Nice to have
North Carolina school finance experience (state allotments, PRC codes, NC DPI reporting)
Experience stepping into an organization during a leadership transition
Schedule: about 30 to 35 hours a week, mostly remote.
Interim School Budget Specialist (Contract), K-12 School District
Wexus Win Works LLC | Remote, with monthly on-site day in Charlotte, NC | Nov 2026 to Feb 2027, possible extension to July 2027
About the role
We’re looking for a hands-on school budget expert to temporarily fill an Assistant Finance Officer for Budget role at a large North Carolina public school district. You’ll handle day-to-day budget work and coach the district’s three budget directors.
What you’ll do
Spend at least 15 hours a week on daily budget operations: budget availability, coding, spending and commitments, and corrections
Support allotments and leveling, checking calculations, funding and staffing adjustments before release
Lead weekly budget review sessions with budget directors, one program code at a time
Hold monthly one-on-ones with each budget director, and join department budget meetings (Exceptional Children, Transportation, Building Services, Academics)
Support FY 2027-28 budget development: projections, staffing assumptions, affordability and reconciliations
Attend the weekly finance leadership meeting (Mondays 8:30 to 10:00 AM ET) and the monthly review in person
What you need
7+ years in school district budgeting or accounting
Hands-on experience with allotments, position control or staffing costs, and budget development
Strong Excel and reconciliation skills
Able to be on site in Charlotte, NC once a month
Eligible to work in the US, with a clean background check
Nice to have
CPA license
North Carolina school finance experience (state allotments, PRC codes, NC DPI chart of accounts)
Schedule: about 15 to 20 hours a week, mostly remote
