About the Role
We are looking for a Lead Data Engineer to support an Enterprise Context Layer and Ontology initiative for a leading fashion retail organization. This role will focus on designing and building the semantic and contextual foundations that connect enterprise data, business concepts, and AI-driven applications.
The ideal candidate brings strong experience in ontology design, knowledge graphs, domain modeling, metadata management, and entity resolution, along with hands-on engineering skills in Python, SQL, and cloud technologies. Experience working with complex retail or B2C data environments would be highly valuable.
This is a great fit for someone who can bridge the gap between data engineering, semantic modeling, data governance, and emerging GenAI/context engineering use cases.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design and development of enterprise ontologies, knowledge graphs, and domain models.
- Define relationships between business entities, concepts, data assets, and metadata to establish a scalable enterprise context layer.
- Develop approaches for entity resolution, semantic modeling, and metadata management across complex enterprise datasets.
- Establish and apply semantic standards to improve consistency and interoperability across data domains.
- Partner with business, data, and engineering stakeholders to translate retail concepts and requirements into robust domain models.
- Incorporate data governance and stewardship principles into ontology and metadata solutions.
- Support prompt and context engineering use cases by making enterprise knowledge and relationships more accessible to AI-enabled applications.
- Build and integrate solutions using Python, SQL, APIs, and GCP services.
- Work with engineering infrastructure including Cloud Run, Google Kubernetes Engine, Cloud Functions, and CI/CD pipelines.
- Help establish scalable patterns and best practices that can extend beyond the initial pilot.
Required Qualifications
- Strong hands-on experience with ontology design and/or knowledge graph development.
- Experience with domain modeling, semantic data modeling, and entity resolution.
- Strong understanding of metadata management, semantic standards, data governance, and data stewardship.
- Advanced proficiency in Python and SQL.
- Experience building solutions within GCP environments.
- Experience designing or consuming APIs and cloud-based services.
- Ability to operate at both the architecture/design level and hands-on engineering level.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to work across technical and business stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in fashion retail, B2C retail, e-commerce, or other consumer-focused environments.
- Experience with prompt engineering and context engineering, particularly for GenAI or AI-enabled applications.
- Familiarity with MCP interfaces.
- Experience with Atlan or similar metadata/catalog/governance platforms.
- Experience working with Cloud Run, GKE, Cloud Functions, and CI/CD.
- Experience building semantic or knowledge layers that connect structured and unstructured enterprise information.
What We’re Looking For
We’re looking for someone who is more than a traditional data engineer. The strongest candidate will understand how enterprise data connects conceptually, be comfortable defining ontologies and semantic relationships, and still be technical enough to turn those designs into scalable, production-ready solutions.
