What This Job Involves

The Commissioning Project Manager leads the testing, validation, and final handover of complex mechanical, electrical, and mission-critical infrastructure systems to ensure they operate safely and according to design specifications. This role requires overseeing the entire commissioning process from design review through project turnover, coordinating with multiple stakeholders, and managing both technical execution and financial performance. You'll serve as the bridge between engineering teams, contractors, vendors, and client executives while ensuring all systems meet stringent quality and safety standards.

Your day-to-day tasks will include:

  • Building comprehensive commissioning plans, correction requirements, milestone schedules, and documentation frameworks from design review through final turnover
  • Overseeing functional performance testing and Integrated Systems Testing (IST) for mechanical, electrical, plumbing (MEP), and life-safety systems
  • Acting as the primary contact between general contractors, vendors, engineering teams, and client executives to coordinate project activities
  • Managing project budgets, forecasting financial performance, monitoring profit margins, and allocating resources effectively
  • Mentoring commissioning engineers and field staff while enforcing compliance with safety and quality standards
  • Conducting design reviews and ensuring systems meet operational requirements before handover
  • Developing and delivering training and documentation for new systems to prepare clients for operation

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • Regular field presence at construction sites, data centers, or industrial facilities
  • Ability to navigate active construction environments and mission-critical facilities
  • May require travel between multiple project sites
  • Office and field-based work environment requiring flexibility

Required Qualifications:

  • 8 to 12+ years of hands-on experience in commissioning, MEP engineering, or mission-critical project management
  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline (Mechanical, Electrical, Construction Management) or equivalent field experience
  • Deep understanding of low/medium voltage power systems, HVAC systems, and building controls (BMS)
  • Proven experience managing project budgets, forecasting, and financial oversight
  • Strong contract interpretation and risk management capabilities
  • Demonstrated team leadership experience mentoring engineers and field staff
  • Experience with mission-critical facilities such as data centers or industrial operations

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional certifications such as CxA (Certified Commissioning Authority), BCxP (Building Commissioning Professional), CCP (Certified Commissioning Professional), or PMP (Project Management Professional)
  • Proficiency in project tracking and management software like Procore
  • Knowledge of redundancy concepts and mission-critical system operations
  • Experience with multiple types of mission-critical infrastructure projects
  • Advanced understanding of integrated systems testing methodologies
  • Strong technical writing skills for documentation and reporting
  • Familiarity with industry standards and best practices for commissioning processes
