About the Role

We are looking for a Staff Backend Engineer to lead the design and evolution of backend services across the Talview platform. You will solve complex technical problems, contribute hands-on code and set engineering standards that help teams deliver reliable systems at scale.

Our backend uses Node.js, PostgreSQL, Redis, AWS Lambda, GraphQL, Hasura and Temporal

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, deploy and operate scalable backend microservices serving millions of users.
• Lead the technical design of complex services and integrations across multiple teams, making clear architectural trade-offs around scalability, reliability, security and maintainability.
• Own multiple critical backend services end to end, from architecture and design through implementation, monitoring, incident response and continuous improvement.
• Define, establish and advocate for organization-wide engineering standards across code reviews, testing, observability and technical documentation, driving consistent adoption across teams.
• Identify technical debt and drive improvements that benefit multiple engineers or teams.
• Own the hands-on implementation of complex and critical components of the architecture, translating architectural decisions into production-ready solutions while guiding engineers through design and implementation.
• Collaborate with Frontend Engineering, QA, Customer Success and Product to turn customer needs into dependable solutions.
• Integrate with APIs, services and data stores, and contribute to proofs of concept and new product features.

What We’re Looking For

• 6–8 years of solid backend development experience, with strong hands-on expertise in Node.js.
• Experience owning complex production services and guiding technical decisions beyond a single feature.
• Strong fundamentals in object-oriented programming, design patterns and SOLID principles.
• Experience writing unit, integration and functional tests and improving testing practices.
• Strong working knowledge of distributed systems, microservices architecture, application tuning and profiling, and CI pipelines.
• Proficiency in SQL, preferably PostgreSQL, with experience in data modeling and query performance.
• Working knowledge of Docker and Kubernetes, and experience operating services in a cloud environment.
• Ability to communicate design choices clearly, mentor other engineers and work across functions.

Nice to Have

• Experience with Redis, AWS Lambda, GraphQL, Hasura or Temporal.
• Hands-on SaaS experience, customer-facing engineering work or high-availability systems.
• Familiarity with Git, REST client tooling and Agile/Scrum practices.
