About the job
The Role
We're looking for an engineer early in their career who wants to build things, break them, and figure out why they broke. This is a hands on role from day one. You'll be in the shop as much as at a desk, and the work spans mechanical design, fabrication, testing, and the software and electronics that make hardware actually do something.
You do not need to have done this professionally yet. What matters is that you've built real things, whether that was a competition car, a robot, or something you made at a makerspace because you wanted to see if it would work. Please note that this role is located at our warehouse in Mountain View that will soon be relocating to Fremont.
What You'll Do
- Design mechanical components and assemblies in CAD, and take them from concept through fabrication and test.
- Build, wire, and bring up prototypes yourself. Machining, 3D printing, soldering, and assembly are part of the job, not someone else's job.
- Run tests, collect data, and figure out what the results mean. Then iterate.
- Write scripts and simple control code to support testing and to get hardware moving.
- Work alongside other engineers and teams on integration.
- Document what you build so the next person can pick it up.
- Work out of our warehouse in Fremont, CA on testing, bring up, maintenance, and repair of hardware in service.
What We're Looking For
- 0 to 2 years of experience, with a degree in mechanical engineering, mechatronics, electrical engineering, or something adjacent. New graduates are welcome.
- Solid mechanical fundamentals: statics, materials, tolerancing, and a working command of CAD.
- Comfort with code. You don't need to be a software engineer, but you should be able to write Python or C to read a sensor, drive a motor, or process test data.
- Shop skills and the instinct to build rather than only model. You've used a mill, a lathe, a printer, or a soldering iron and you aren't precious about getting your hands dirty.
- Genuine eagerness to learn. You ask questions, you chase down answers, and you'd rather be told what you got wrong than left alone with it.
