Description

JOURNEY GROUP: OUR STORY

Journey Group is a full-service construction group headquartered in Sioux Falls, S.D., with four divisions serving commercial, manufacturing, industrial, civil, residential, and asphalt markets. We are known for building strong relationships, delivering high-quality projects, and operating with integrity, teamwork, and fiscal responsibility. At Journey, you're not just joining a company - you're joining a team committed to building communities and growing together.

OUR OPENING

We're growing and looking to add a Design Manager to our Journey Construction team. This is a new role and a rare opportunity to build an in-house design capability from the ground up. You'll be both a hands-on practitioner and a leader, producing design and construction documents yourself while managing the design process across in-house staff, outside consultants, and our operations teams. This position will primarily support healthcare, renovation, and commercial/industrial projects.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO AS A DESIGN MANAGER?

  • Lead in-house design on design-build and design-assist projects from concept through construction documents
  • Produce plans, elevations, sections, details, and specifications, and present design options with their cost, schedule, and constructability impacts
  • Determine the right balance of in-house design and outside consultants, and manage consultant agreements
  • Turn concept-level drawings into coordinated, constructable documents that subcontractors and vendors can price and build from
  • Support renovation work with existing-conditions documentation, phasing plans, and tie-in details
  • Partner with Project Managers, Superintendents, and Preconstruction to align design with budgets and schedules and reduce rework and RFIs
  • Serve as a key client contact on design matters and support business development
  • Establish Journey's design and documentation standards, templates, and detail libraries

Requirements

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION NEEDED

  • Active Registered Architect (RA) license
  • Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field
  • 7+ years of experience in design, architecture, or construction project management
  • Hands-on experience personally producing construction documents
  • Healthcare design or construction experience strongly preferred
  • Renovation experience in occupied or phased facilities strongly preferred
  • Design-build or design-assist experience preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Needed

  • Strong understanding of building codes, regulations, and permitting
  • Working knowledge of structural, MEP, and building envelope systems
  • Proficiency in Revit, AutoCAD, BIM platforms, Bluebeam, and SketchUp
  • Ability to communicate design intent clearly to owners, consultants, and field crews
  • Self-starter who can build standards and processes where none exist
  • Valid driver's license and safe driving record

Benefits You Will Experience With Journey Group

Journey Group offers competitive pay, annual bonus opportunities, and a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, 401(k) with company match, HSA/FSA options, disability coverage, wellness programs, paid time off, paid holidays, and paid parental leave.

You may also be eligible for a cell phone allowance, clothing allowance, mileage reimbursement, and potential relocation assistance.

OUR TEAM NEEDS YOU! If you're ready to advance your career and make an impact by helping build strong projects and communities, apply online or stop by our office at 4500 W 58th Street, Sioux Falls, SD 57108.
