In office - WFH flexibility

About the job
FLINT A&E
The position can be based out of any of the three offices (Bay Area, Sacramento, San Diego).
The Opportunity
FLINT is building a different kind of design and construction company—one where architecture, engineering, modeling, procurement, manufacturing, and construction operate as one integrated system.
Structural engineering is a critical part of that flywheel.
We are looking for a Principal Structural Engineer to lead structural engineering within FLINT A&E and help shape how structures are conceived, designed, modeled, fabricated, and built.
This is not a traditional consulting engineering position.
You will work directly with architects, VDC/modeling teams, estimators, fabricators, trade partners, project managers, and field teams to develop structural solutions that are technically excellent, highly constructible, cost-effective, and optimized for how buildings actually get delivered.
You will also play a key role in the continued development of Hummingbird, FLINT's prefabricated building platform.
What You'll Do
- Lead structural engineering across FLINT projects from concept through construction.
- Serve as Structural Engineer of Record when appropriate.
- Develop structural systems, calculations, details, specifications, and construction documents.
- Work upstream with architecture and preconstruction to evaluate structural systems based on cost, schedule, constructability, procurement, fabrication, and erection.
- Collaborate directly with VDC and modeling teams in a model-based design environment.
- Support procurement, prefabrication, manufacturing, and field installation.
- Lead structural coordination and submissions through DSA.
- Establish FLINT's structural engineering standards, workflows, BIM practices, and QA/QC processes.
- Provide practical engineering support when conditions change in the field.
- Mentor future structural engineers and help build the structural engineering practice within FLINT A&E.
Who We're Looking For
You are an experienced structural engineer who can operate independently and enjoys solving problems across the entire building process—not just producing engineering documents.
You understand both engineering and construction and are comfortable moving between calculations, Revit models, design meetings, cost discussions, fabrication decisions, and conversations in the field.
Required
- California PE license.
- California SE license strongly preferred.
- Significant structural engineering experience on complex building projects.
- Strong DSA experience.
- Ability to independently lead structural design with limited technical oversight.
- Strong knowledge of California building codes and structural design standards.
- Proficiency in Revit and modern structural analysis/design tools.
- Strong understanding of construction means, methods, detailing, and constructability.
Experience with K–12 education, design-build, prefabrication, modular construction, or manufacturing-based building systems is especially valuable.
Why FLINT
Most structural engineers design a structure and hand it downstream.
At FLINT, you can follow your decisions all the way through:
Architecture → Engineering → Modeling → Procurement → Manufacturing → Installation → Warranty & Service
You will see how your designs affect cost, fabrication, installation, schedule, and long-term building performance—and have the opportunity to continuously improve the system.
We are looking for someone who wants to do more than engineer projects.
We want someone who wants to help reinvent how buildings are delivered.
