Sonder Health is tackling a $25B crisis in hospital operations. Each year, millions of hospitalized patients who are medically ready to leave can't get discharged because coordinating post-acute care (skilled nursing, rehab, home health) is slow and manual. Sonder is building an AI-powered platform that accelerates the discharge process and reduces length of stay. This helps get patients to the next setting of care faster, improving clinical outcomes and bolstering hospital financial stability.

About the Role

As a Founding Engineer at Sonder Health, you'll work directly with our Head of Engineering and co-founders to build software that helps hospital teams move patients to the right next setting of care. We've built the initial platform; you'll help turn that foundation into a product hospitals rely on every day.

You'll work across the frontend, backend, and infrastructure, combining hands-on engineering with product thinking and direct customer collaboration. As you get up to speed, you'll take independent ownership of substantial parts of the product—from understanding the problem to shipping a solution and making it successful in practice.

In this role, you'll:

🏗️ Build and own core product workflows: Develop the interfaces, services, and AI-powered workflows that help hospital teams coordinate discharge and post-acute care.

🔌 Connect our platform to the healthcare ecosystem: Build integrations with EHRs, payers, and post-acute care providers.

🤝 Work directly with customers: Partner with hospital teams to understand their workflows, shape requirements, and support implementations—including on-site when needed.

🔍 Shape our technical direction: Make architecture and build-versus-buy decisions alongside our Head of Engineering.

👥 Help build the engineering team: Establish our engineering practices, contribute to hiring, and shape how we collaborate.

🚀 Help define what good AI in healthcare looks like: Hospitals are starting to trust AI with critical operations. What gets built now sets the bar.

Our tech stack: TypeScript across the frontend and backend, with React and Vite, Node.js and NestJS, and infrastructure on AWS and Aptible.

You could be a great fit if you:

• Have 5+ years of software engineering experience building and shipping products end-to-end.
• Want to apply AI to critical workflows. Our agents call providers, send faxes, and manage the insurance verification process. You care about making that dependable through evals, guardrails, and close attention to how it behaves in the real world.
• Work AI-native today. Coding agents are part of how you ship every day, and you know how to direct them and review their output critically.
• Are comfortable working across the frontend, backend, and infrastructure, and enjoy owning everything it takes to get a feature into users' hands and keep it running.
• Have taken a product from an ambiguous problem to a working solution, ideally at an early-stage startup.
• Care deeply about user experience and product quality.
• Are excited to work directly with leading healthcare institutions and front-line care teams, including in person.
• Bring strong systems thinking and engineering judgment.
• Take initiative and ownership, even when the most important problems fall outside engineering.
• Are curious about healthcare and motivated to improve the experience of patients and the
• Are based in the NYC metro area and excited to work together in our NoMad office 3–4 days a week.

Bonus points for: experience building AI-powered products, integrating with EHRs, or delivering software in healthcare.
