Associate IT Operations Engineer

Behind every ride uploaded, every workout synced, and every Wahooligan at their desk is a set of systems that simply must work. Wahoo's Technical Operations team keeps those systems reliable and keeps our people equipped to do their best work - from the cloud infrastructure our services run on to the laptops and accounts our colleagues depend on every day.

As an Associate IT Ops Engineer, you'll start where a lot of great infrastructure engineers start close to the people and the everyday systems. In your first months you'll own the hands-on IT that keeps our Atlanta office and its people running - setting up laptops, managing access, and solving the day-to-day problems that land in the queue. From there, mentored by our Senior IT Ops Engineer and Site Reliability Engineer, you'll grow into the engineering half of the job: automating that manual work, building the integrations that connect our internal systems, and getting real exposure to monitoring, incident response, and our cloud environment alongside the SRE.

We're upfront about that shape because it's the whole point of the role. The IT work is where you'll learn how our systems fit together - and where we'll be watching for the one instinct we care about most: the reflex to automate repetitive work rather than just grind through it. Bring that, and the path forward is clear. This role sits on our IT Ops engineering track and grows into IT Ops Engineer, where writing code - integrations, automation, and internal tooling - is a core part of the job, not a side project. And because you'll be working alongside our SRE from early on, Site Reliability Engineering is a genuine option too, if that's where your interests take you.

What You’ll Do

The balance shifts over your first 12-18 months, moving from mostly hands-on IT support toward a roughly even split with engineering work. Early on, you'll focus on:

• Endpoint & Device Support: Set up, configure, and support laptops and endpoints for staff - imaging, enrolment, and MDM - so every Wahooligan is equipped to do their job.
• Access & Accounts: Handle account provisioning, access requests, and identity and password resets, keeping things secure and moving quickly.
• Frontline Support: Own the day-to-day support queue and keep the Atlanta office's IT running smoothly, acting as the friendly first point of contact for colleagues who need help.
• SaaS & Systems Administration: Administer business tools and systems, keeping access and configuration tidy, documented, and secure.
• Documentation: Write up what you do so the team builds a shared, reusable knowledge base rather than relying on memory.

As you grow, you'll take on more of the engineering side:

• Automation: Script and eliminate the repetitive work above, so it stops being manual - the clearest signal of your growth into the role.
• Integrations & Internal Tooling: Write and maintain the code that connects our internal systems - provisioning workflows, onboarding pipelines, and small tools that replace manual steps.
• Monitoring & Incident Response: Help watch our services, respond to alerts, and learn incident response alongside the SRE.
• Cloud & Infrastructure: Work hands-on with our cloud environment (AWS, Kubernetes/EKS) and CI/CD pipelines.
• Infrastructure & Reliability Projects: Contribute to improvements across our internal systems and infrastructure, taking increasing ownership as you develop.

The Instinct We're Hiring For

The best operations engineers don't do the same manual task twice if they can teach a machine to do it. We're hiring far more for that instinct than for any particular technology - and we mean it, so we'll be looking for it from day one in how you approach even the routine work.

• Automate, don't grind: Faced with fifty manual password resets, your first thought is how to script them. Repetitive work is a problem to solve, not just a queue to clear.
• Curiosity about why: When something breaks, you want to understand the root cause, not just restore service and move on. That curiosity is what turns IT work into engineering.
• A service mindset: You take real pride in colleagues being unblocked and systems staying up. You understand the everyday IT work is the foundation everything else is built on, and you do it well.
• Trust is the product: Whether it's a colleague's laptop or a production service, someone is relying on it. You treat reliability as something people are counting on, because they are.

What We’re Looking For

This is a genuinely junior role. Beyond a short list of things you'll need on day one, we're hiring for aptitude and attitude far more than for a checklist of technologies.

• Working knowledge and hands-on experience with a scripting language - JavaScript, Python, Bash, or similar - and comfort on the command line.
• Working knowledge and hands-on experience with Git.
• Genuine curiosity about how systems work, and the instinct to fix or automate things rather than repeat them.
• Methodical problem-solving: you enjoy digging into why something broke, not just restoring it.
• Clear, friendly communication - you'll be the first point of contact for colleagues who need help.
• Reliability, ownership, and a service mindset: you're happy to do the essential everyday IT work well, and you understand it's the foundation the rest is built on.
• Thoughtful use of AI tools - you use them to move faster while staying accountable for the outcome, rather than pasting in answers you don't understand.
• Based in (or able to relocate to) the Atlanta area, and able to work in-office, particularly in the earlier stage of the role.

Nice to Have

Any of these is a plus - none is required.

• Experience with GitHub - branches, pull requests, and code review.
• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, such as Jenkins or GitHub Actions.
• Exposure to Linux, or to automating any part of your own work.
• Any hands-on experience with cloud platforms (AWS especially) or containers.
• Familiarity with a ticketing system (e.g. Jira) or previous IT support experience.
• A homelab, side projects, or coursework - anything that shows self-directed learning.
• Interest in cycling, running, endurance sports, or connected fitness hardware.

Success Indicators

• Owns the everyday IT and support work reliably, so colleagues stay unblocked and the office runs smoothly.
• Starts turning manual, repetitive tasks into automated ones - often before being asked.
• Asks good questions, learns quickly, and grows steadily into the monitoring and reliability side of the role.
• Communicates clearly and keeps commitments, with a friendly, solutions-oriented approach.
• Over time, takes on small pieces of our internal systems and infrastructure with increasing independence, building toward IT Ops Engineer-level ownership.
