Field Applications Systems Engineer

Job Description

The Field Applications Systems Engineer provides technical support for strategic customers in the San Francisco Bay Area, with a primary focus on power electronics applications and Wide Bandgap (WBG) semiconductor technologies including Silicon Carbide (SiC) and Gallium Nitride (GaN).

This role works closely with customer engineering teams to evaluate, design, and implement onsemi solutions across energy infrastructure, industrial power, electrification, renewable energy, AI power delivery, and advanced power conversion applications. The engineer will collaborate with sales, applications, marketing, product engineering, quality, and reliability teams to support customer development activities and enable successful product adoption.

The ideal candidate has a solid foundation in power electronics and semiconductor technologies, enjoys solving technical problems, and is comfortable supporting both device-level and system-level engineering discussions

Responsibilities

• Provide technical support for strategic customer programs from initial evaluation through production.
• Assist customers with device selection, design reviews, validation, troubleshooting, and technical issue resolution.
• Support customer adoption of onsemi solutions including SiC, GaN, power devices, gate drivers, sensing, and protection products.
• Participate in customer meetings, technical reviews, workshops, and product demonstrations.
• Develop application-focused knowledge of customer systems and power conversion architectures.
• Collaborate with Sales, Applications Engineering, Product Marketing, Product Engineering, Quality, and Reliability teams to address customer requirements.
• Create technical presentations and system block diagrams to support customer engagements.
• Document technical findings, customer activities, and action items.
• Communicate customer requirements and product feedback to internal teams.
• Stay current on power electronics technologies, industry trends, and emerging WBG applications.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related technical discipline.
• 8+ years of relevant experience with a Bachelor's degree, or 6+ years of relevant experience with a Master's degree.
• Experience in Applications Engineering, Field Applications Engineering, Power Electronics Design, Semiconductor Engineering, or a related technical field.

• Knowledge of power semiconductor technologies, including:

• Silicon Carbide (SiC)

• Gallium Nitride (GaN)

• MOSFETs

• IGBTs

• Gate Drivers and Power ICs

• Experience with one or more of the following:

• AC-DC power conversion

• DC-DC converters

• DC-AC inverters

• Battery management and protection systems

• Motor control systems

• Ability to analyze and troubleshoot power electronics circuits and systems.

• Experience using laboratory equipment such as oscilloscopes, power analyzers, electronic loads, and programmable power supplies.

• Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills.

• Ability to work effectively with customers and cross-functional engineering teams.

• Willingness to travel as needed to support customer engagements.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master's degree in electrical engineering or a related field.
• Experience supporting energy infrastructure, renewable energy, EV charging, battery management, industrial automation, or data-center power applications.
• Experience working for a semiconductor supplier, power electronics company, or industrial OEM.
• Knowledge of thermal design, reliability, EMI/EMC, or power module technologies.
• Familiarity with SiC or GaN device applications and design considerations.
• Customer-facing technical support experience.

onsemi is excited to share the base salary range for this position is $138, 575.00 to $ 176,410.00. The r ange exclusive of fringe benefits, or potential bonuses. The final pay rate for the successful candidate will depend on geographic location, skills, education, experience, and/or consideration of internal equity of our current team members.
