Ready to make an impact? We're looking for an onsite intern to join our team for the 10-week Summer Internship program (May 17 - July 23, 2027) at our headquarters in Wilmington, NC. Applications are due by 11:59 p.m. ET on Monday, September 28th.

How This Role impacts Live Oak and its People

The Data Engineer Intern will be a key player in the design and implementation of Live Oak’s next generation data warehouse and analytics platforms, building data pipelines, and other core platform capabilities that inform and enable decision making with trusted, high-quality data at Live Oak.  The ideal candidate is a self-motived teammate with good problem solving and communication skills with the ability to adapt and learn quickly, provide results with limited direction, and choose the best possible operational decisions.

What You’ll Do at Live Oak

You'll work on a cross-functional scrum team within a scaled agile environment to build out data products that enables our partner teams to analyze, aggregate, and make informed decisions from the highest quality data.  Your customers are Finance, Compliance, Lending, and Deposits teams, and your products are high quality, timely data sources and aggregations that empower others to continuously understand and build insights via a self-service model.  Below are some of the activities you would be learning to perform on a regular basis.

• Define and create data ingestion patterns, pipelines, and standards that can support self-service analytics users across all bank domains (deposits, loans, checking, etc)
• Be a hands-on contributor that can build data products as needed, from source to target ingestion, transformative data models and data marts that provide high quality, trusted data for self-service consumers.
• Build role-based access controls and fundamental Data Platform management processes that enable growth and scalability within the business teams at the bank
• Participate in continually refining and prioritizing the work necessary to support our analytics tools and processes.
• Help establish and document designs, standards, and user guides to help Product teams consume the data you create.

How You’ll Do It

• You'll build data that matters.  We make data available to help small businesses and entrepreneurs get the capital and financial services they need to succeed and support their local communities.
• Your team decides the best technical approach and commitments, not your manager.
• Collaborate with super-smart people to build and deploy next generation data solutions, as we enable capabilities to transform the outdated financial banking system.
• Design, develop, and deliver high-quality, performant and scalable data and analytics solutions suitable to high-impact technical challenges
• Create and evolve Live Oak’s data processing pipelines, including ETL/ELT jobs, events processing, and job monitoring and alerting
• Partner with engineers, data scientists, and senior leadership to define and refine our data analytics architecture and technology choices
• Engage in all phases of the agile software development lifecycle in a cross-functional team setting

Preferred Experience

• 2-6 months of hands-on experience with data modeling and transformation, using tools like SQL, DBT, ascend.io, or Informatica with source code control in Gitlab/Bitbucket

• 2-6 months of experience working with AWS-based data warehouse technologies like Redshift, Databricks, Snowflake

• 2-6 months of experience with orchestration tools such as Airflow or AWS Glue

• Basic understanding of event-driven and/or streaming workflows with tools like Kafka and Spark

• Ability to work in a team environment and not take yourself too seriously.

• Basic understanding of the Agile methodology and their role within the scrum process

The base pay range for this position is $19.77 - $32.12 per hour. Compensation may also include annual bonuses and long-term incentives, subject to various metrics and company policy. A candidate’s salary is determined by several factors including travel, relevant work experience or skills and expertise.
