About the job

Position Summary

Belmont Medical Technologies develops solutions for critical care, surgical, emergency, and trauma environments that help healthcare professionals deliver reliable, efficient, and high-quality patient care when it matters most. We are seeking a Staff Software Engineer to provide senior technical leadership and hands-on development for digital medical-device and healthcare products. The role spans tablet and mobile applications, web interfaces, cloud services, databases, APIs, and integrations that connect to or support Belmont products. This is a product R&D role, not an internal business-systems or IT application role.

As a staff-level individual contributor, this engineer will shape architecture, turn product and user needs into executable technical plans, write production code, and guide internal engineers and external partners through influence. The role has no direct reports anticipated at hire and is expected to remain meaningfully hands-on.

The successful candidate combines pragmatic engineering judgment with disciplined execution in a regulated environment. They apply controls in proportion to product risk and intended use, communicate tradeoffs and uncertainty clearly, and help teams deliver secure, reliable increments without losing sight of longer-term architecture and maintainability.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Architecture and Strategy

  • Define and evolve software architecture across mobile/tablet, web, cloud, data, API, and integration layers, with clear boundaries, interfaces, and ownership.
  • Translate product strategy, customer needs, system requirements, and usability inputs into solution designs, technical roadmaps, architectural decisions, and actionable backlog items.
  • Make and document pragmatic platform, security, scalability, reliability, and lifecycle tradeoffs; identify technical debt and propose risk-based remediation plans.
  • Partner with the Head of Software Engineering and peer technical leaders to establish reusable patterns, engineering standards, and a coherent digital-product technology strategy.

Hands-on Software Development

  • Design, implement, test, deploy, monitor, and maintain production software across the digital product stack, including front-end applications, cloud services, APIs, databases, and system integrations.
  • Write clean, secure, testable, reusable, and appropriately documented code; contribute directly to technically complex or high-risk areas.
  • Create and maintain automated tests, development environments, build and deployment pipelines, logging, monitoring, and diagnostic capabilities appropriate to each product.
  • Investigate and resolve defects, performance bottlenecks, application failures, cybersecurity findings, and integration issues across the full stack.

Technical Leadership and Delivery

  • Lead architecture and design reviews, code reviews, technical planning, and root-cause investigations; mentor engineers and raise the technical capability of the broader team.
  • Break complex work into clear increments, provide credible estimates and assumptions, identify dependencies and risks early, and communicate concise status and recovery options.
  • Work within an agile product-development model using a transparent product backlog, release goals, and sprint-level commitments; balance delivery, quality, technical debt, and learning.
  • Coordinate work across internal engineers and specialized third parties, clarifying deliverables, interfaces, acceptance criteria, and technical accountability without relying on formal people-management authority.
  • Drive decisions to the appropriate level of detail and maturity, favoring useful engineering evidence and timely progress over unnecessary formatting or premature perfection.

Regulated Product Development and Quality

  • Apply Belmont's quality system and software lifecycle processes to medical-device software and supporting digital products, including IEC 62304 and other applicable regulatory and quality requirements.
  • Work with Systems Engineering, Quality Assurance, Regulatory Affairs, and Cybersecurity to determine intended use, product boundaries, risk classification, required evidence, and the appropriate level of lifecycle rigor.
  • Contribute to software plans, requirements, architecture and detailed design, traceability, risk controls, verification, anomaly management, release records, and change control with documentation proportionate to risk.
  • Build security and privacy into product design and implementation through threat modeling, secure coding, dependency management, vulnerability remediation, access control, data protection, and security verification.

Cross-functional Partnership

  • Collaborate with Product Management, Product Owners, Program/Project Management, Systems Engineering, UI/UX, Quality, Regulatory, Operations, Service, and Customer Support to deliver product outcomes.
  • Explain architecture, technical constraints, risks, options, and progress in language appropriate for technical and non-technical stakeholders; escalate decisions with clear recommendations.
  • Engage customers, clinical stakeholders, and commercial teams as appropriate to understand workflows and translate validated needs into usable, supportable product capabilities.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, a related technical discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Typically 10+ years of progressive software product-development experience, including substantial hands-on full-stack or distributed-system development and technical leadership.
  • Demonstrated ownership of production software architecture and delivery across multiple layers of a modern application stack.
  • Strong foundation in software design principles, API and data design, distributed systems, scalability, reliability, maintainability, and application security.
  • Experience leading through influence: mentoring engineers, facilitating technical decisions, reviewing designs and code, and coordinating contributors or external development partners.
  • Experience with agile or iterative product development, including backlog refinement, technical decomposition, estimation, sprint/release planning, and incremental delivery.
  • Experience developing regulated, safety-relevant, healthcare, life-science, or similarly controlled products, with the judgment to produce clear and proportionate lifecycle documentation.
  • Ability to communicate complex issues at the right level of abstraction, make recommendations with incomplete information, and manage multiple priorities with visible ownership and accountability.

Technical Experience

Candidates should bring hands-on depth in several of the areas below and the ability to work effectively across the remainder. The precise technology mix may vary by product and is less important than sound architecture, engineering discipline, and the ability to learn adjacent technologies.

  • Front-end web development using modern JavaScript/TypeScript frameworks such as React or Angular, including collaboration with UI/UX designers.
  • Mobile or tablet development for Android (Kotlin/Java) and/or iPadOS/iOS (Swift), including device integration and application lifecycle considerations.
  • Back-end services using one or more modern server-side platforms such as C#/.NET, Java, Node.js/TypeScript, or Python.
  • Relational database design and SQL (for example PostgreSQL or SQL Server); familiarity with NoSQL technologies where appropriate.
  • Cloud architecture and services, preferably AWS, including deployment, observability, resilience, data protection, and cost awareness.
  • RESTful APIs and system integrations; healthcare interoperability experience such as HL7 or FHIR is an advantage.
  • Identity and access management using technologies such as OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, SAML, role-based access control, and single sign-on.
  • Git-based source control, pull-request/code-review workflows, CI/CD, automated unit/integration/system testing, static analysis, software composition analysis, and defect tracking.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with medical-device software lifecycle practices and standards such as IEC 62304, software risk management, design controls, traceability, verification, and controlled release/change processes.
  • Experience applying cybersecurity practices to connected medical devices or healthcare software, including threat modeling, vulnerability management, and secure product maintenance.
  • Experience integrating digital applications with embedded devices, clinical workflows, or enterprise healthcare environments.
  • Experience supporting global product releases and working with geographically distributed teams or external development organizations.

Core Competencies

  • Systems thinking and strong technical judgment
  • Pragmatic problem solving and bias toward delivery
  • Clear, concise written and verbal communication
  • Ownership, accountability, and constructive escalation
  • Collaboration across technical and non-technical disciplines
  • Coaching, mentoring, and leadership through influence
  • Adaptability in a growing, evolving technology environment
  • Commitment to quality, patient safety, cybersecurity, and user outcomes
