Software Engineer (Mid to Senior)

About the role

You will be a core member of our engineering team, building the backend systems that carry client operations onto AI. This is a backend-focused role for engineers who are comfortable at scale and comfortable with other people's messy reality.

You will design, build, and deploy services that handle everything from retrieval over petabyte-scale document troves to long-horizon planning agents, inside client infrastructure, under client security constraints, with a handover date on the calendar from day one.

What you'll do

• Build client systems end to end. Own the design and delivery of scalable, secure backend services that run inside a client's environment and against their existing schema.
• Build large-scale retrieval and data pipelines. Design robust retrieval over petabyte-scale document troves and engineer pipelines for large-scale data collection and processing.
• Develop agentic systems. Build the backend infrastructure for complex planning agents running up to a thousand steps against critical business processes, plus the organisational interfaces that let humans supervise and correct them.
• Work inside existing stacks. Integrate with the CRM, ERP, and ticketing systems clients already run. We adapt to their permissions model and their data as it is, not the other way around.
• Contribute to cloud architecture. Shape infrastructure decisions across engagements, ensuring high availability and performance.
• Engineer for security. Client data stays in the client environment. Full audit logging on everything we build. You will hold that line yourself, on every project.
• Hand it over. Write the runbooks, build the evals the client can rerun after we are gone, and train the operators who will run it day to day.

Requirements

• Experience. 5 to 8 years of professional software engineering experience.
• Proven technical impact. A demonstrated track record of delivering complex, high-quality backend systems.
• Product building experience. A history of building and launching robust products or platforms, ideally in a hyper-growth or 0-to-1 startup environment.
• Deep technical expertise. A hands-on, highly technical backend engineer, proficient in Python for backend services and AI pipelines, and in large-scale systems: distributed systems, large-scale data processing such as Spark, and cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP).
• Ownership and drive. You take full ownership of your projects, with a strong bias for action and the ability to manage complex priorities in a fast-paced environment.
• Pragmatic problem-solving. Resourceful and comfortable with ambiguity. You will inherit undocumented processes and half-owned data more often than a clean brief.
• Clear communication. You can articulate complex technical ideas clearly and persuasively, including to the client operators and executives who will live with what you build.

Preferred experience

• TypeScript and React, for contributing across the stack
• Full-stack experience more broadly

Minimum qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience with demonstrated impact on production backend systems.
• Hands-on proficiency in Python and experience with distributed systems, large-scale data processing, or cloud infrastructure.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills. You will work directly with client teams and must convey technical decisions clearly to engineering peers and non-technical stakeholders.

About Slipway
