JOB SUMMARY:
The Structural Designer is responsible for developing fabrication-ready structural drawings and 3D models for engineered-to-order modular products, including custom modular buildings, power conversion stations, and energy storage enclosures. Working closely with structural engineers, project managers, and other designers, this role translates engineering concepts and calculations into accurate, code-compliant design documentation ready for shop fabrication.
Essential Job Duties And Responsibilities
- Develop fabrication-ready 2D drawings and 3D models using Autodesk Inventor and AutoCAD based on engineering direction, sketches, and specifications.
- Read, interpret, and understand architectural, structural, electrical, and mechanical drawings and specifications.
- Model and detail structural members, connections, and assemblies for modular building, enclosure, and power-conversion products.
- Design canopy, walkway, enclosure, and custom structural assemblies for commercial and industrial applications under engineer direction.
- Perform or assist with basic structural layout and load-path documentation; support licensed engineers in preparing calculation packages.
- Conduct drawing reviews and mark-ups for compatibility, completeness, and dimensional accuracy across Architectural, Structural, and MEP packages.
- Apply AWS D1.1 weld symbology and sheet-metal design best practices to fabrication details.
- Collaborate with the Engineering department across disciplines and with project managers to monitor project progress and implementation.
- Support development and maintenance of standard drawing templates, design guidelines, and reference details for reuse across projects.
- Participate in training initiatives and knowledge-sharing within the Engineering department.
- Ensure all work is performed according to the company’s safety and quality standards.
- Perform other related duties as required or assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Work Experience:
Minimum 2–5 years of experience in a structural, mechanical, or architectural design/drafting environment, preferably in manufacturing, fabrication, or commercial construction.
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering Technology, Drafting & Design Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Civil/Structural Engineering, or a closely related field from an accredited institution; or Associate’s degree with equivalent professional experience.
Licensure:
No licensure required. EIT or pursuit of PE licensure is a plus.
Related Experience & Skills:
- Proficiency in Autodesk Inventor 3D modeling and AutoCAD 2D drafting; SolidWorks experience also valued.
- Familiarity with iLogic or other parametric/automation techniques in Inventor is a strong plus.
- Working knowledge of AWS D1.1 weld symbols and sheet-metal design best practices for fabrication-aware detailing.
- Ability to read and mark up Architectural, Structural, and MEP drawings and specifications.
- Basic understanding of IBC, ASCE 7, and structural load concepts; formal code analysis performed by licensed engineers.
- Familiarity with FEA concepts and the ability to prepare geometry suitable for analysis is a plus.
- Experience with sheet metal design best practices and fabrication-aware detailing.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
- Experience with project management or CRM tools is a plus.
- Familiarity with LEAN principles is beneficial.
- Detail-oriented with strong ability to interpret and mark up drawings and shop details.
- Self-motivated; works effectively independently and in a collaborative team environment.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and adapt to shifting priorities.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for drafting drawing notes, revision descriptions, and design documentation.
