Career Opportunity: Development Team Lead

Make an Impact with Technology that Changes Lives

Are you a natural people leader who genuinely loves helping engineers grow? Join PESI and use your leadership skills to power life-changing education for professionals around the globe. As a Development Team Lead, you will own the day-to-day people leadership for a subset of our development team — coaching, unblocking, and growing your engineers — while working shoulder-to-shoulder with peer leads and reporting to the IT Development Manager. You’ll stay close enough to the technical work to earn credibility and speak the language of your team, but this is a people-first role: your primary job is leading and developing engineers, not writing the most code. If that mix of leadership instinct and technical curiosity sounds like you, read on.

Who We Are:

Since 1979, PESI has reached millions of professionals every year with advanced training that helps them bring hope and healing to others. Our mission is simple but powerful: connect knowledge with need. From mental health to healthcare, we deliver innovative, cutting-edge education that makes a meaningful difference in people’s lives.

With offices on three continents and growing, we’ve built a culture rooted in inquisitiveness, collaboration, responsibility, and continuous learning.

How We Work:

We embrace curiosity, creativity, and a commitment to continual improvement.

Our values guide us:

  • We innovate boldly. We learn fast and fall forward.
  • We empower our people. Every associate contributes to our success and acts like an owner.
  • We build trust. We go direct, assume competence, and communicate openly.
  • We act with purpose. Every decision we make aims to deliver measurable value—to our business and the people we serve.

Overview of the Information Technology Team:

The PESI IT Team supports every aspect of our organization, from desktop support to enterprise software development. We build and manage systems that drive innovation, streamline operations, and enhance the customer experience. Our team values agility, accountability, and cross-functional collaboration. We’re looking for someone who can think strategically while managing fast-moving, iterative development work with purpose and precision.

The Development Team Lead is one of several peer-level people leaders within the development team, each responsible for a subset of developers. These leads report directly to the IT Development Manager and work collaboratively with one another to keep the broader team aligned, unblocked, and moving in the same direction.

Leads in this role also work in close partnership with the VP of IT, both as a resource for their own leadership development and to stay connected to the broader strategic direction of the IT organization. This relationship is an intentional investment in growing strong, strategically-minded leaders.

What You Will Be Doing:

People — Managing, Coaching & Supporting the Dev Team

  • Serve as one of the people managers for the development team — handling day-to-day coaching, feedback, and performance conversations
  • Coordinate PTO, capacity, and scheduling to ensure the team is appropriately staffed and workloads are balanced
  • Foster a positive, respectful, and energized team culture where engineers feel supported and empowered
  • Run 1:1s consistently and create a safe space for engineers to raise blockers, ideas, or concerns
  • Lead onboarding for new team members, ensuring they ramp quickly and understand SOPs, team norms, tools, and expectations

Stay Technically Fluent — A Plus, Not the Priority

  • Stay close enough to the code to earn credibility with your team — weighing in on pull requests and technical discussions, and diving into the code when your leadership duties allow.
  • Familiarity with our tech stack (C#, .NET Core, ASP.NET Core/MVC, React, TypeScript) helps you keep up with the conversation — deep, current expertise isn’t required, and we’re glad to help you build it.
  • Partner with senior engineers and architects on major technical decisions, translating direction into guidance your team can act on — you don’t need to be the one designing every system.

Coordinate — Avoiding Work Collision & Aligning with Product

  • Actively manage work assignment and task coordination across the dev team to prevent duplication, collision, or competing priorities
  • Partner closely with Product Owners, SMEs, and business experts to understand priority order and ensure the team’s work reflects agreed-upon goals
  • Facilitate and/or participate in various ceremonies including standups, planning, backlog refinements, and various ad hoc meetings in support of the Development Manager
  • Track and communicate progress on development work, surfacing risks or blockers early and keeping stakeholders informed
  • Work with project managers and IT leadership to drive software projects from initiation to delivery

Disseminate — Socializing Architecture, Patterns & Key Decisions

  • Ensure architecture decisions, design patterns, and technical direction set by IT leadership are clearly understood and applied by the team
  • Translate technical complexity into clear guidance that engineers can act on
  • Promote best practices, coding standards, and workflows that drive consistency and quality across the codebase
  • Keep the team engaged and informed on the technology roadmap and how their work fits into the bigger picture
  • Cultivate — Subject Matter Expertise, Learning & Team Growth
  • Identify and cultivate subject matter expertise within the team, encouraging engineers to develop deep knowledge in key areas
  • Field technical questions from team members and connect them with the right resources, peers, or documentation
  • Mentor developers at all levels, supporting their career growth and helping them get outside their comfort zone
  • Stay in touch with emerging technology trends and share relevant learnings with the team
  • Build a culture of continuous learning, curiosity, and collaborative problem-solving

You’ll Thrive Here If You Have:

Leadership & People Skills

  • 3–5+ years of experience leading, coaching, or managing a team — in software development, IT, or another technical environment
  • A genuine passion for mentoring engineers and helping them grow
  • Experience managing team capacity, PTO coordination, and workload balancing
  • A track record of building positive, high-trust team cultures
  • Experience facilitating agile ceremonies or coordinating iterative development workflows

Communication & Coordination

  • Clear, direct communication skills — written and verbal, technical and non-technical
  • Ability to translate between business priorities and engineering work
  • Proactive approach to identifying blockers, risks, and misalignments before they become problems
  • A collaborative, organized mindset for managing across teams and stakeholders

Flexible, Iterative Mindset

  • Comfort working in fast-moving environments with evolving priorities
  • A background in adaptive, feedback-driven development even if not in formal Agile frameworks
  • A love of continuous improvement and collaborative problem-solving

What Would Thrill Us:

Business & Strategic Insight

  • Experience in marketing, business development, product ownership or business ownership
  • A strong understanding of how technology drives business results
  • Technical Depth
  • Hands-on experience with our tech stack (C#, .NET, ASP.NET, React, or TypeScript) — enough to dig into the code with your team when you want to. This isn't a hard requirement, and we'll support you in strengthening it if needed.

Who Tends to Thrive Here:

  • People who are creative, adaptable, collaborative, and energized by learning
  • People who seek answers and advice, ask thoughtful questions, and stay open to feedback and debate
  • People who can say “I don’t know” when they do not, and “here’s why I disagree” when they do
  • People who support ideas with data, follow that data as they scale, and use results to make better decisions
  • People who are driven to find what is next, willing to lose, and able to turn what they learn in failure into future success

Who May Find This Role Challenging:

  • People who prefer to wait for someone else to tell them what to do next
  • People who need extreme structure or routine to stay on track
  • People who struggle with constructive criticism, feedback, or debate from experienced industry experts
  • People who prefer to work as lone wolves rather than build strong internal relationships
  • People who are afraid to ask for help or ask questions when something is unclear
