About the job

About the Company

The C++ Alliance is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting and growing the C++ ecosystem. We fund infrastructure, tooling, documentation, and community initiatives that keep the ecosystem healthy, modern, and accessible to developers everywhere.

About the Role

The C++ Alliance is seeking a strong, well-rounded Rust Developer to design, build, and maintain the tooling, services, and infrastructure behind our engineering work. This is a role for a systems-minded generalist: someone who is comfortable owning a problem from design through deployment and who takes pride in shipping clean, reliable software. You'll work closely with our engineering team on real-world, high-impact infrastructure. We care less about which corners of the stack you’ve touched before and more about depth of craft, sound judgment, and the ability to work well in a distributed team.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain Rust-based tools, services, and CLI applications
  • Own features end to end, from design and implementation through testing and deployment
  • Write clean, well-tested, well-documented, production-grade Rust
  • Participate in code review, architecture discussions, and technical planning
  • Diagnose and resolve performance, reliability, and correctness issues in production systems
  • Contribute to and maintain CI/CD pipelines and developer tooling
  • Document technical decisions clearly for both internal and public audiences

Qualifications

  • 3+ years building production systems, with significant Rust experience (professional or substantial open-source)
  • Strong grasp of Rust's ownership model, concurrency primitives, and async ecosystem (Tokio or async-std)
  • Experience building and maintaining CLI tools, services, or backend systems in Rust
  • Solid software engineering fundamentals: testing, version control (Git), CI/CD, and code review
  • Strong written communication, since much of our work is asynchronous and clear documentation and PR descriptions matter
  • Self-directed and comfortable in a remote, distributed team

Preferred Skills

  • Experience contributing to or maintaining open-source projects, ideally in Rust or developer tooling
  • Experience with WebAssembly, FFI, or cross-language tooling
  • Familiarity with cloud infrastructure and deployment (AWS, Docker, etc.)
  • Prior experience with a nonprofit, foundation, or open-source-focused organization

Pay range and compensation package

Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience, generally targeting a range of $140,000–$160,000 USD base depending on seniority and specialization. Exact compensation will be discussed during the interview process.

How to Apply

Along with your application, please include:

  1. A link to your GitHub profile (or GitLab, sourcehut, etc.). We'd like to see real Rust you've written and can evaluate. Point us to the project or two you're proudest of, with a sentence of context if the work isn't obvious from the repo. If your strongest Rust lives in private or company repos, tell us about it and we'll take that into account.
  2. A short note, in your own words, on one meaningful design decision in that code: what the tradeoff was and why you chose as you did.

Short and specific is perfect. We care more about how you think than about polish.

Equal Opportunity Statement

The C++ Alliance, Inc. is an equal opportunity employer. We welcome applicants of all backgrounds and encourage those passionate about open source and systems programming to apply.
