About the job

We're looking for a full-time Design Lead to build and support our software and product team. You’ll be responsible for UX/UI, shaping digital product decisions while owning delivery and making sure our sales and development teams are aligned on design outcomes.

About Compass:

Compass IoT helps transport professionals make data-backed decisions about our roads and infrastructure. Founded in 2018, we aggregate connected vehicle data that is used by state governments, local councils, and private orgs across Australia, New Zealand, the UK, the United States, and Canada.

We're a team of 26 people who value collaboration, energy, ambition, and building things that solve genuine problems.

What You'll Do:

  • Hands-on Design. This isn't a role where you wait for permission. You're in Figma, producing wireframes, flows, and polished UI that engineering can actually build from. You own the visual and interaction layer end-to-end, rooted in commercial business outcomes.
  • Align teams around outcomes that matter. Work closely with engineering, marketing, sales, to drive successful design outcomes.
  • Bridge the human and the technical. Empathise with users and engineering alike; understand what people need and what's realistic to build, and advocate where necessary.
  • Balance scope and priorities. You scope first, not last. Priorities are clearly ranked, and you push when it matters, and on what matters most. You know when to push and when to protect scope and can communicate clearly and build trust across functions

What we look for:

  • Comfortable with change, adaptable. You've scaled before or worked in a startup environment. You've lived through the ambiguity and the flexibility of a fast-moving company: the pivots and constant iterations. That excites you, not exhausts you. You hold plans loosely and your outcomes tightly.
  • Positive energy, no brilliant jerks. You lead with empathy and kindness and show up in a way that makes people want to work with you. We're casual, but we care deeply about our people, our product, and the problems we're solving. No one here is too senior to do a coffee run or too junior to have the best idea in the room.
  • Technical fluency. You don't need to write code, but Front-end experience is an advantage. You understand enough to be a real partner to an engineering team, or at least a willingness to learn.
  • Design skill with product instincts. You have a history in UX/UI and have crossed into product, or the other way around.
  • Customer obsession, outcome focus. You keep the user at the centre of every decision, every trade-off, every conversation. You care about impact, not just output or the quantity of features being pushed.
  • Craft over credentials. We care far more about how you think than where you've worked. Show us a problem you identified, the process you ran, and the outcome you drove.
  • Test, learn, iterate. You don't hand off and disappear. You're in the testing cycle, watching how people use the thing, and feeding that back into what comes next. You welcome change and view it as part of the process rather than a verdict on your work.
  • Experience in design and/or scaling a SaaS product ideally in a high-growth environment

Don't tick every box? If you've got the right attitude and most of the experience, we'd still love to hear from you.

Why you’ll love it here:

  • ESOP: We have no investors. We want the people that build our stuff to directly benefit from its success.
  • Competitive Pay: Sydney is expensive, and we want to remunerate fairly for someone's experience. We review salaries regularly, including bonuses and promotions.
  • Other perks: Offsites, free coffee, and a well-stocked kitchen.
  • High care, high performance culture: Big ambitions, real support. We push each other to be brilliant and look after each other while we do it
  • Genuine impact: You'll be in a team at a company that's changing how the world thinks about traffic and transport data.

How to Apply

Send your resume and profile to [email protected]

Tell us three things:

  1. Something you've shipped that you're proud of (code, design, data or product). Just tell us what it was, your part in it, the problem you were trying to solve, the outcomes you were aiming for, and why it mattered.
  2. Show us one piece of work: a Figma file, a case study, a process doc. Under NDA? Describe it at whatever level you can.
  3. Why this role, and why Compass?

We expect people to use AI. But if your application is nothing more than a generic and unedited AI response, we won't consider it. If you can't take the time to tailor your application or even visit our website, why should we take the time to read it?

We may use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to support parts of the hiring process, such as reviewing applications, analyzing resumes, or assessing responses. These tools assist our recruitment team but do not replace human judgment. Our final hiring decisions are ultimately made by humans. Tell us why you want one of our orange hoodies in your application, our company colours are definitely not purple. While we don't care if you use AI to help you, we do care deeply about effort beyond a quick LLM dump.
