About the job
Senior Mechanical Engineer
SiLC is a silicon photonics and optical sensing company building next-generation coherent lidar solutions. We have an immediate opening for a full-time, on-site (in Monrovia, CA) Senior Mechanical Engineer. This person will be part of a dynamic and experienced team focused on building revolutionary FMCW lidar solutions. Responsibilities include owning the full mechanical design and integration of coherent lidar sensors for high-precision industrial metrology. This mechanical work will involve optical subassemblies, free-space optics, optical scanners, electronics, and enclosure/cooling systems. The ideal candidate will have strong hands-on experience integrating optics and electronics into a common mechanical assembly. This role will require cross-functional interaction with other teams, including electrical and optical engineering. The candidate should have strong communication skills and be able to own all aspects of the product life cycle from prototype to production.
Responsibilities:
- Own the full mechanical layout and design of coherent lidar systems, integrating optical, photonic, and electrical subassemblies into a single cohesive product.
- Design and detail machined parts, sheet metal components, and cast parts using SolidWorks, including production-ready drawings with full GD&T callouts.
- Design thermal management solutions for electronic enclosures, power semiconductors, and optoelectronic devices, including fan-driven and natural convection cooling.
- Drive design for manufacturability (DFM), design for assembly (DFA), and cost optimization across mechanical components.
- Support the full product lifecycle — concept, detailed design, prototyping, pilot builds, and transition to production — including NPI and ramp-to-production support.
- Collaborate closely with electrical and optical engineering teams to co-develop subsystem interfaces and integration requirements.
Qualifications:
- B.S. in Mechanical Engineering (M.S. preferred); at least 5 years of relevant industry experience.
- Expert-level CAD skills in SolidWorks, including advanced solid modeling, detailed production drawings, tolerance stack-up analysis, and rigorous application of GD&T.
- Demonstrated experience designing machined parts, sheet metal components, and cast parts, with knowledge of fabrication processes such as CNC milling, EDM, die casting, laser cutting, and finishing processes (anodizing, plating, powder coating).
- Hands-on experience designing complex mechanical assemblies that integrate optics, electronics, and enclosures with thermal management.
- Strong cross-functional collaboration skills, with proven ability to work closely with electrical and optical engineers.
· Experience with PDM/PLM tools (e.g., SolidWorks PDM) and familiarity with NetSuite ERP or equivalent.
· Experience designing assembly and test fixtures.
Bonus Skills:
- Experience with lidar, or other optical/photonic sensing products.
- Experience with SolidWorks Simulation FEA or a comparable tool (e.g., ANSYS) for mechanical and thermal analysis.
- Hands-on experience with 3D printing and rapid prototyping techniques.
Compensation
- Base salary: $120,000 - $140,000 based on experience level and qualifications
- Stock options
- Other benefits include health/vision/dental insurance, 401(k), etc.
