Job Description: Senior Electrical Engineer

  • Advisory, Due Diligence and Consulting: Providing world-class technical, operational, and financial diligence to infrastructure investors and developers alike while advising debt and equity investors throughout the project finance and M&A process to protect our client’s interests.
  • Independent Engineering: Producing bankable engineering reports that capture technical, commercial, operational, and financial data required to secure underwriting of even the most complex of projects.
  • Owner’s Engineering, Engineering Services and Project Management: Building and implementing project execution plans that meet the needs of financial institutions, minimizing CapEx and delivering highest quality projects on time and on budget. Providing the complete engineering needs for discreet engineering projects.
  • Front-End Engineering, EPCM and EPC Services: Providing support to developers on all aspects of projects across finance and development – from the conceptual phase to front-end engineering to structure robust RFP packages for optimum EPC pricing – and detail design engineering, procurement and construction management services to support post-financial close. Partnering with local, regional and national construction companies, Nexus PMG can provide complete plant solutions through delivery, commissioning and operations.
  • Operations and Field Services: Ensuring project success from execution to operations with operational readiness and performance improvement services including a proprietary benchmarking tool that can perform readiness assessments as well as comprehensive project turnarounds; tailored programs for commissioning and start-up support for technologically diverse projects; and targeted performance improvement initiatives for existing facilities.

The Senior Electrical Engineer leads electrical design and engineering delivery for utility-scale solar, battery energy storage, and microgrid projects from feasibility through commissioning. The role owns calculations, models, drawings, and specifications; stamps deliverables as Engineer of Record; and coordinates with civil, structural, mechanical, and controls disciplines, procurement, construction management, and interconnecting utilities. The successful candidate carries a project from single-line concept through energization and closes out the design record.

The Senior Electrical Engineer will report to the Vice President of Engineering or Project Manager depending on project assignment. Location is in our Greenville, SC office.

Key Responsibilities

Design and Analysis

  • Develop electrical basis of design, load lists, and single-line diagrams for AC and DC systems from 480 V through 345 kV.
  • Perform and document load flow, short circuit, protective device coordination, arc flash, motor starting, harmonic, grounding, and lightning protection studies in ETAP or an equivalent platform.
  • Model photovoltaic energy production and losses in PVsyst or an equivalent platform and reconcile modeled output against independent engineer and lender expectations.
  • Size and specify conductors, raceways, cable trays, medium-voltage collection systems, inverters, transformers, switchgear, UPS, DC-coupled and AC-coupled battery blocks, and balance-of-plant equipment.
  • Perform DC string sizing, inverter loading ratio optimization, voltage drop analysis, and DC-to-AC capacity trade studies.
  • Design battery energy storage electrical systems, including power conversion system integration, augmentation planning, thermal management interfaces, and NFPA 855 compliance.
  • Design microgrid architectures, including islanding and reconnection schemes, black start sequences, generator and inverter dispatch, power quality mitigation, and load shedding logic.
  • Produce and check construction drawings: site electrical plans, grounding plans, conduit and cable schedules, panel schedules, protection and metering diagrams, control schematics, and interconnection details.
  • Develop protection and control philosophy, relay settings, and coordination with utility protection requirements.

Project Execution

  • Serve as discipline lead on EPC and FEED projects, controlling scope, hours, schedule, and deliverable quality against the project execution plan.
  • Prepare and defend engineering estimates, deliverable registers, and man-hour budgets.
  • Review vendor submittals, factory acceptance test procedures, and shop drawings; resolve technical deviations.
  • Support procurement through technical bid evaluations, requisitions, and equipment specifications.
  • Respond to requests for information, field change requests, and construction queries; issue as-built revisions.
  • Support commissioning, energization, and performance testing, including relay testing witness, capacity test review, and punch list resolution.

Compliance and Interconnection

  • Design to NEC (NFPA 70), NFPA 70E, NFPA 855, IEEE 1547, IEEE 80, IEEE 519, UL 1741 SA, and applicable IBC and state amendments.
  • Prepare interconnection application packages and respond to utility and ISO study comments, including feasibility, system impact, and facilities studies.
  • Apply NERC reliability standards to transmission-connected and large distribution-connected facilities.
  • Seal and issue drawings and calculations as Engineer of Record within the limits of licensure.

Technical Leadership

  • Check and stamp the work of junior and mid-level engineers and designers or work with third-party peer reviewers to provide stamping.
  • Mentor engineering staff and CAD designers, and set discipline standards, templates, and calculation methods.
  • Present technical positions to clients, lenders, independent engineers, and authorities having jurisdiction.

Required Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from an EAC-ABET-accredited program.
  • Coursework or demonstrated depth in power systems, electrical machines, and power electronics.

Licensure

  • Active Professional Engineer license in at least one U.S. jurisdiction, or the ability to attain licensure within the initial 3 to 6 months of employment.
  • Active NCEES record and willingness to obtain licensure by comity in additional states

Experience

  • Ten+ years of electrical engineering experience in power generation, transmission, distribution, or industrial power systems.
  • Five+ years of experience with an engineering, procurement, and construction organization, an owner's engineer, or an AE of Record firm delivering capital projects is desired.
  • Demonstrated design experience across all three of the following: utility-scale or commercial and industrial solar photovoltaic, battery energy storage, and microgrid or islanded power systems.
  • Medium-voltage design experience at 4.16 kV or above, including collection system and substation interface work.

Software

  • ETAP or an equivalent power systems analysis platform (SKM PowerTools, EasyPower, PSCAD, PSS/E, or DIgSILENT PowerFactory).
  • PVsyst or an equivalent solar production modeling platform (Helioscope, PlantPredict, SAM, or PVcase).
  • AutoCAD; Revit or Navisworks for coordinated models.
  • Microsoft Excel at an advanced level, including calculation workbooks.

Technical Skills

  • Short circuit, coordination, and arc flash study execution and report authorship.
  • Grounding grid design per IEEE 80.
  • Protective relaying: settings development, coordination curves, and functional testing support.
  • Power quality analysis: harmonics, flicker, voltage regulation, and reactive power compensation.
  • Cable and conductor sizing, including ampacity derating and NEC Article 690 and 706 application.
  • Transformer, switchgear, inverter, and PCS specification and evaluation.
  • SCADA, EMS, and plant controller interfaces, including Modbus, DNP3, and IEC 61850 concepts are a plus
  • Cost estimating, quantity takeoffs, and constructability review.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master of Science in Electrical Engineering with power systems concentration.
  • Experience with green hydrogen, renewable natural gas, data center, or process industry electrical scopes.
  • Experience with FEED-phase deliverables, Class 3 estimates, and front-end loading gate reviews.
  • Substation physical and protection design experience.
  • Hydrogen electrolyzer, electric boiler, or large variable frequency drive load design experience.
  • Experience supporting federal grant, DOE loan program, or tax equity technical due diligence.
  • NFPA 70E-qualified electrical worker training and field commissioning experience.
  • Familiarity with independent engineer report requirements and lender technical review processes.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

  • This position works from the Greenville, SC office five days per week.
  • Site visits occur on active construction sites and require personal protective equipment, ascent of ladders and stairs, and work in extreme heat, cold, and dust.
  • The role occasionally requires extended hours during proposal periods, submittal milestones, and commissioning.
