About the job

Are you passionate about shaping the future of power distribution and ensuring the reliability of next-generation electrical grids? Do you thrive on tackling complex engineering challenges and innovating at the forefront of DC system protection? If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you to join our dynamic team at Siemens Technology!

At Siemens, we're not just imagining the future; we're building it. Our commitment to innovation drives us to develop cutting-edge solutions for data centers, microgrids, and advanced MVDC/LVDC systems. As a Direct Current (DC) System Protection Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in designing and implementing robust protection architectures that safeguard these critical infrastructures.

Why Siemens?

  • Impactful Work: Contribute to projects that are revolutionizing energy distribution and sustainability.
  • Innovation Hub: Work with state-of-the-art technologies and collaborate with leading experts in the field.
  • Growth Opportunities: Siemens is committed to your professional development, offering continuous learning and career advancement.
  • Collaborative Environment: Join a diverse and inclusive team where your ideas are valued and your contributions make a real difference.

What You'll Be Doing (Your Responsibilities):

As a key member of our engineering team, you will:

  • Architectural Design: Develop innovative Medium Voltage (MV) to Low Voltage (LV) integrated DC protection architectures tailored for critical applications like data centers, microgrids, and advanced MVDC/LVDC systems.
  • Protection Scheme Development: Design, analyze, and rigorously evaluate DC fault detection, isolation, and interruption schemes to ensure optimal system resilience and safety.
  • Advanced Studies: Conduct comprehensive DC short-circuit, fault current, and intricate protection coordination studies to inform robust system designs.
  • Innovation: Develop sophisticated protection schemes for selective coordination and fault discrimination, and simulate AC-to-DC networks and protection devices using industry-leading tools such as PSCAD, MATLAB/Simulink, and other relevant platforms.
  • System Validation and Testing: Develop and execute DC protection validation plans, including power-hardware-in-the-loop, controller-HIL, and laboratory testing for DC fault detection, protection coordination, fault clearing, converter interaction, and system-level performance under dynamic loads.
  • Customer Project Support: Provide expert technical analysis and conduct thorough system design reviews to support our valued customer projects, ensuring successful implementation and performance.
  • Thought Leadership: Contribute to the advancement of the field by generating patents, publishing technical papers, and actively shaping our technology roadmaps.

Qualifications:

  • Education: A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering is required. A Professional Engineer (PE) license or a Ph.D. in a related field is highly preferred and will be a significant asset.
  • DC Power Expertise: Strong knowledge and demonstrated understanding of DC power distribution systems, AC-to-DC networks, or DC microgrids.
  • Fault Studies & Coordination: Proven experience with DC fault studies and practical application of protection coordination principles.
  • Power Electronics Acumen: Working knowledge in power electronics, including familiarity with SiC MOSFETs, SiC JFETs, IGBTs, and GaN devices.
  • Simulation Proficiency: Hands-on proficiency with simulation tools such as PSCAD, PLECS, MATLAB/Simulink, PSS SINCAL, or other relevant tools.
  • Testing Experience: Hands-on experience with high-power system HIL testing and troubleshooting power-electronic-based systems. Proficiency in RTDS, Opal-RT, or relevant tools.
  • Practical Experience: Familiarity with lab testing, hardware validation, and working with high-power electrical equipment is a plus.
