Remote- based position
About Subtext
Subtext is a two-way SMS platform that helps media, sports, music, automotive, and political brands build direct, owned relationships with their audiences, bypassing algorithms and third-party platforms. We're backed by Advance Local, growing fast, and building a real go-to-market engine from the ground up.
THE ROLE
We're hiring our first dedicated Solutions Engineer to be the technical backbone of the sales process: building demo environments that show prospects and existing customers what Subtext can do, and owning the technical narrative on our most complex capability, the API/webhooks layer that lets customers integrate Subtext into their own stack.
This is an IC role reporting into the VP of Sales. It is not a product management role (Product retains roadmap ownership), but you'll be the most consistent source of field evidence Product gets.
Compensation for this position is comprised of a base salary plus incentive compensation. The base salary range is $120,000 to $130,000 per year. Additional incentives bring total potential compensation to $145,000 to $155,000.
What We're Looking For
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, engineering, business, marketing technology or a related field preferred; or equivalent relevant experience could be considered
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in a pre-sales, solutions engineering, or sales engineering role at a B2B SaaS company.
- API/webhook fluency is the core of the job, with strong working knowledge of APIs, webhooks, integrations, data flows, and SaaS platform architecture needed
- Comfortable building things independently. You won't have a team to hand this to
- Strong communicator who can translate technical capability into a business story for non-technical buyers
- Enough product/technical judgment to push back when a prospect's ask isn't realistic. We'd rather you say “no, but here's what we can do” than overpromise
- Bonus: experience in media, sports, music, automotive, or political verticals, or with SMS/messaging platforms specifically
What You'll Own
- Custom demo environments: build and maintain demo instances tailored to specific prospect and upsell use cases, not generic walkthroughs. You decide what “great” looks like here.
- Demo tooling: identify, evaluate, and (with approval) procure whatever tools or sandbox infrastructure make demos sharper and faster to stand up.
- Pre-sales technical ownership: be the go-to person AEs bring in when a deal gets technical, especially anything involving the API/webhook integration layer. You'll often be the one answering “can it actually do X” in real time on a call.
- Structured feedback to Product: capture recurring patterns from prospect and customer conversations (feature gaps, objections, competitive workarounds, integration asks) and deliver them to Product in a consistent, evidence-based format. This is influence through data, not authority over prioritization. Product owns the roadmap.
- Sales enablement: after each product-shaping conversation, translate what you learned back to the sales team so reps aren't discovering capability gaps live on a prospect call.
GROWTH PATH
This is scoped today as an individual contributor role. As pre-sales and demo volume grows with the business, there's a real path to building and leading a Solutions Engineering function, but that expansion tracks with company scale.
