We are looking for: Automation Engineer – Device Manufacturing

Job Overview

The Automation Engineer leads the design, development, and implementation of automated manufacturing systems for the production of electronic devices and cellular communication modules, including internet routers, telematics units, and MiFi devices. This hands-on, on-site role combines industrial automation, mechanical design, and manufacturing engineering expertise to transition products from development into high-volume manufacturing. The Automation Engineer drives continuous improvement in safety, quality, throughput, and cost, and reports to the Head of Capital Projects.

Key Responsibilities

Automation System Design & Development

  • Design, develop, and implement automated manufacturing equipment for electronic device and cellular module production.
  • Design mechanical fixtures, tooling, workholding, and automated assembly systems using CAD software.
  • Specify, integrate, and troubleshoot automation equipment including robots, conveyors, vision systems, sensors, servo systems, and PLC-controlled machinery.

Project Leadership & Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Lead automation projects from concept through design, construction, installation, commissioning, verification, and production launch.
  • Collaborate with Product Development, Controls Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, and Supply Chain teams to ensure products are designed for manufacturability (DFM) and automation (DFA).
  • Support supplier selection, equipment procurement, and factory acceptance testing (FAT/SAT).

Process Development & Documentation

  • Develop manufacturing processes utilizing robotic handling systems, automated testing equipment, Surface Mount Technology (SMT), and automated PCB assembly.
  • Develop manufacturing documentation including process flows, work instructions, equipment specifications, PFMEAs, and validation protocols.
  • Optimize production line layouts to maximize throughput, yield, and equipment utilization.

Continuous Improvement & Troubleshooting

  • Analyze manufacturing data to improve Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE), reduce downtime, and improve first-pass yield.
  • Troubleshoot manufacturing equipment and implement corrective and preventive actions.
  • Identify opportunities for automation, cost reduction, and continuous improvement using Lean Manufacturing principles.
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards and industry regulations.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Automation Engineering, Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • 7+ years of experience in manufacturing automation or industrial equipment design.
  • Strong mechanical design experience including fixtures, tooling, machine design, and automated equipment.
  • Experience with CAD software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or Inventor.
  • Knowledge of industrial automation systems including PLCs, SCADA, HMIs, servo motion, robotics, and machine vision.
  • Experience integrating automated production equipment into manufacturing environments.
  • Strong understanding of Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly/Automation (DFA).
  • Experience troubleshooting electromechanical systems.
  • Strong project management and cross-functional communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Surface Mount Technology (SMT) manufacturing processes and electronic assembly.
  • Experience with cellular communication modules, IoT devices, RF products, or consumer electronics manufacturing.
  • Experience with automated optical inspection (AOI), SPI, ICT, functional testing, and end-of-line test systems.
  • Familiarity with IPC-A-610, IPC J-STD-001, and other electronics manufacturing standards.
  • Experience programming industrial robots (FANUC, ABB, Universal Robots, Epson, etc.).
  • PLC programming experience (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Beckhoff, Omron, etc.).
  • Knowledge of MES systems and Industry 4.0 manufacturing technologies.
  • Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma certification.
  • Experience supporting New Product Introduction (NPI).

Work Environment & Location

  • This position is based on-site in Solon, Ohio.
  • On-site presence is required to support equipment installation, FAT/SAT activities, startup, and production ramp.
  • This role reports to the Head of Capital Projects and works cross-functionally with Product Development, Controls Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, and Supply Chain teams.
