Overview

A healthcare/genomics organization is seeking a Senior Infrastructure Engineer to serve as the designated backup and knowledge-continuity resource for its on-premises data center and network environment. This role ensures uninterrupted operation of critical infrastructure supporting a genomics pipeline and clinical laboratory systems, and works to eliminate single points of failure in IT operations. The engineer will independently operate all core on-premises infrastructure — servers, storage, networking, and security systems — including emergency coverage of the primary infrastructure lead, in a hybrid IT/clinical operations environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Serve as designated backup for the primary infrastructure lead, assuming full operational control during absences or emergencies.
• Administer physical and virtual server infrastructure (Windows Server, Linux, VMware/Hyper-V), including provisioning, patching, and capacity planning.
• Manage LAN/WAN networking operations including switches, routers, firewalls, and VLANs.
• Build and maintain runbooks, network diagrams, and disaster recovery documentation.
• Support on-premises genomics pipeline infrastructure to meet throughput and availability requirements.
• Collaborate with bioinformatics, clinical lab, and IT teams to align infrastructure reliability with lab workflows.
• Identify and remediate infrastructure risks including aging hardware and configuration vulnerabilities.
• Respond to infrastructure incidents and outages, including after-hours escalations.

Required Experience & Skills

• 7+ years of hands-on enterprise IT infrastructure engineering experience in a complex, predominantly on-premises environment.
• Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field (or equivalent experience).
• Deep expertise in server administration (Windows Server 2016/2019/2022, Linux) with VMware vSphere or Microsoft Hyper-V.
• Strong networking fundamentals: routing, switching, VLANs, firewall policy management (Cisco, Palo Alto, Fortinet, or equivalent).
• Experience managing physical data center environments (rack/stack, cabling, power, cooling).
• Proficiency with SAN/NAS storage platforms and enterprise backup/recovery systems (Veeam, Commvault, or equivalent).
• Working knowledge of Microsoft 365 and Azure Active Directory in hybrid on-prem/cloud contexts.
• Strong documentation skills — runbooks, network diagrams, SOPs.
• Ability to learn complex, undocumented environments quickly and operate independently under pressure.

Nice to Have

• Experience in healthcare, clinical laboratory, genomics, or regulated life sciences environments.
• Relevant certifications: CCNA/CCNP, VCP-DCV, MCSE, CompTIA Network+/Security+.
• Familiarity with HPC or high-throughput bioinformatics pipeline infrastructure.
• Exposure to HIPAA compliance, NIST frameworks, or SOC 2 audit environments.
• Scripting proficiency (PowerShell, Bash, or Python) for infrastructure automation.
• Experience with monitoring platforms (PRTG, SolarWinds, Zabbix, or similar).
