The work
We have been commissioned to design and build the front end of a new digital product for an early stage venture. Instead of a will being a static website, it becomes an immersive experience. A 2D-3D space to explore large data sets and rethink how web navigation works for relational data.

The brief is to make this feel closer to a beautifully crafted web game than a website. Think the calibre of experience you would find in a space exploration game, but loading fast and running smoothly for everyday people on everyday devices. The emotional weight of the content demands real care in how it is designed and engineered, and that is exactly the kind of work we love.

What you will do

• Design and build immersive, interactive experiences in the browser, working with our design team from concept through to production.
• Help shape the technical approach during discovery, including the choice between a lighter 3D canvas route and a fuller game engine route, and then own that decision through the build.
• Write production quality front end code with real discipline around load times, frame rates and performance on ordinary hardware, including mobile.
• Integrate cleanly with a back end platform built by a partner team, and stand up light services of your own where the experience needs them.
• Treat security and data sensitivity as first class concerns, because the content people trust to this product is deeply personal.

What we are looking for

• Demonstrable experience building interactive or game like experiences for the web. This is the heart of the role and your portfolio should show it.
• Strong skills in WebGL based tooling such as Three.js, React Three Fiber, Babylon.js or PlayCanvas, with the judgement to know when each is the right tool.
• Solid full stack capability: modern JavaScript or TypeScript, a framework such as React, API integration, authentication, and comfort working against a third party back end.
• A genuine designer's eye for motion, space and storytelling. You will work alongside designers, but you should be able to think like one.
• The performance instincts of someone who has shipped real time experiences to real users: asset budgets, progressive loading, graceful degradation.

Nice to have

• Unity experience, particularly WebGL builds, or a background in other game engines. This is a preference, not a requirement.
• Shader work, audio design, or accessibility experience within immersive experiences.

This is a freelance engagement starting with a discovery and design phase in August 2026, with a strong likelihood of extension into the full build as the product grows. Day rate depending on experience.
