About the job
The Role
We're looking for a Frontend Intern to own all UI and web work for Lumo V1: the chat interface, mobile experience, authentication UI, and the visual polish that makes an AI product usable. You'll build the surface that every other team's work (query answers, analytics, telemetry, reports) ultimately gets seen through. This is a hands-on, build-from-scratch role and you'll be the first and only person dedicated to frontend, working closely with the CTO and the backend/data interns.
About Lumo
Lumo is building an AI platform for large industrial facilities: a conversational chatbot over unified facility data, plus automated role-based email reporting. The product is CMMS-agnostic, deploys inside a customer's own infrastructure, and is being built by a small team of engineering interns working directly with the CTO. We're an 11-week self-imposed build targeting a deployable V1 we can bring to prospects.
What You'll Build
• Chat UI shell: message input, message list, streaming responses (SSE), loading states
• Response card components: summaries, ranked lists, explanation blocks, alarm/status displays
• Mobile-first, responsive design: touch targets, keyboard handling, iOS/Android edge cases, lightweight payloads
• Authentication UI: login flow, session handling, logout against LDAP-based auth
• Role-based layouts: compact views for Technicians, detailed views for Supervisors and Directors
• Time-range selector and other query controls
• Static geocoding overlay: rendering asset positions on PDF/image site diagrams
• Ongoing visual polish and cross-browser testing (desktop Chrome, mobile Safari/Chrome)
What We're Looking For
• Comfortable with Next.js and Tailwind CSS, or able to ramp quickly
• Solid fundamentals in responsive/mobile web design — you think about small screens by default, not as an afterthought
• Experience building UI that consumes a REST/streaming API (SSE or websockets a plus)
• An eye for clean, functional interface design; you can turn a rough concept into something people trust
• Comfortable working independently in a fast-moving, ambiguous environment — you'll be defining a lot of this track yourself
• Bonus: experience with auth flows, data visualization, or working with LLM-generated content in a UI
How We Work
• Daily async written standup (3 lines: did / doing / blocked)
• Two-week sprints with planning, mid-sprint check-in, and a live demo at the end of each sprint
• Claude Code is used throughout to accelerate implementation — you'll be expected to work fluently with AI-assisted coding
• Direct collaboration with the CTO on architecture and code review
Logistics
• ~20 hrs/week, flexible scheduling around your class or other commitments
• Remote
• UnPaid internship
• Runs through the remainder of the V1 build (through late Q3 2026), with potential to continue into V1.5
