About the job
Paysign is hiring a Senior Engineer / Technical Lead to own and lead the core engineering team for our card-issuing and transaction-processing platform. This is a hands-on technical leadership role for someone who wants ownership of a complex, mission-critical system that moves real money through the major card networks every day.
You will be the technical anchor for a platform spanning card management (CMS), transaction processing (EFT / JPOS / ISO 8583), and REST/SOAP partner APIs — all running inside a PCI DSS Cardholder Data Environment (CDE). The role combines deep individual contribution with mentorship and architectural leadership of a small, high-trust engineering team
.
What You'll Own
- Card Management System (CMS) — Java-based operator console used by issuer-services and finance teams for cardholder inspection, balance adjustments, voids, and reconciliation
- EFT / Transaction Processing — Core JPOS-based engine speaking ISO 8583 to the major card networks. Authorization, clearing, settlement, refund, void, reversal, AVS — the entire transaction lifecycle
- Issuer APIs — REST and SOAP endpoints partners use to provision cards, enroll cardholders, fund accounts, and query transaction data
- Account lifecycle & negative-balance logic — The state machines governing money-correct handling of chargebacks, refunds, and balance recovery
- Performance & data layer — MySQL tuning, query optimization, replica-read strategy, transaction-log management at scale
What You'll Do
- Lead architecture and design across CMS, EFT, and the API surface
- Mentor a small team of engineers; review PRs, set coding standards, own the technical roadmap
- Partner with card network vendors on certifications, mandate compliance, and incident resolution
- Own production code that runs inside the PCI CDE — including code-review discipline, change management, and segregation-of-duties for production deploys
- Lead production incident investigations — JPOS logs, ISO 8583 traces, query plans
- Ship through a structured CAB-driven release cadence with QA, release engineering, and compliance partners.
What You Bring
Required
- ired7+ years building production Java systems; deep comfort with the JVM, concurrency, JDBC, and transaction management
- Direct experience with JPOS or another ISO 8583 messaging stack
- Prior work inside a PCI DSS Cardholder Data Environment — practical understanding of CDE boundaries, tokenization, key management, and audit requirements
- Production integration experience with major card networks (cert testing, mandate releases, message-format work)
- Strong relational database skills — MySQL preferred — including indexing, replication, and slow-query diagnosis
- Fluent with GitHub workflows (branching, PR review, protected branches, code-owner gates
- Track record of leading or mentoring a small engineering team
Strongly Preferred
- Server-side Java UI experience (Vaadin or similar) for operator consoles and internal tools
- Chargeback / dispute / negative-balance lifecycle for prepaid or debit products
- REST API design — idempotency, partner versioning, payload validation
- Multi-DC MySQL HA experience
- Vendor management — comfortable on a call with a network representative debugging a settlement discrepancy
- Prior technical lead or team lead title
Nice To Have
- Linux operations (RHEL/CentOS), systemd, basic SRE instincts
- Exposure to SOC 2, PCI 4.0, or similar audit cycles
- AWS familiarity — the platform is gradually migrating to cloud-managed infrastructure
- On-Call & Support Expectations
- This is a 24x7x365 production platform that processes live card transactions. The role includes shared responsibility for keeping it running
Other Expectations
- Participation in a shared on-call rotation with the rest of engineering
- As Tech Lead, you're the senior escalation point for incidents in your domain regardless of rotation
- Production deploys are typically off-hours to minimize cardholder impact — expect to be available as the technical owner of your changes
- Network partners don't keep business hours; expect occasional off-hours engagement for cert or settlement issues
- Small team means cross-coverage — back up peers during PTO and holidays
- We provide flex scheduling after off-hours work, tiered escalation (NOC and L1/L2 filter before engineering), and on-call compensation
What We Offer
- A senior seat on a small team where your decisions ship to production every two weeks
- Direct ownership — no layers between you and the problem
- A mature, profitable business with a clear technical roadmap
- Competitive compensation, full benefits, and relocation assistance for the right candidate
Location: Las Vegas, NV. This is an on-site role. We are not considering remote candidates
