Mechanical Design Engineer

Smart is looking for a mid-level or senior level human-centered mechanical engineer to join our engineering team!

The engineering discipline at Smart is tightly integrated into the full design process. Our engineers work collaboratively with designers to research opportunities, come up with original concepts and develop them into real world products, overcoming technical challenges in the process.

Responsibilities:

• Own technical aspects of the product development process, including:
• Competitor, technology, and materials analysis
• Concept generation
• Prototyping at varying levels of fidelity
• Mechanism design
• 3D CAD modelling
• Design for manufacture
• Technical documentation
• Be involved with in-person and remote research sessions and co-creation workshops to understand user needs, and help shape product or service opportunities
• Work closely with designers and strategists to ensure technical feasibility of concepts
• Clearly communicate technical information to non-technical client teams, both verbally and in document form
• Create robust, easy to edit CAD models using best practices

Naturally you’ll have:

• 2+ years’ experience as an action oriented design engineer
• Human-centered approach and some experience with design thinking and user-research
• Experience with CAD software (Creo preferred or Solidworks)
• A love of teamwork and collaboration
• Prototyping skills and the ability to communicate a concept through mockups and hacks
• Excellent communication and presentation skills and desire to share what you know
• Empathy. Great design is based on understanding other people, how they behave, what they care about, what they want to achieve
• Bonus if you have been involved through to manufacturing and launched product

Please note, the role is based in Brooklyn and the candidate will be onsite a minimum of Tuesday to Thursday, onsite though 4 days per week are often required for project needs.

The salary range will be dependent on experience and from a full-time salary perspective will range from $75,000-$95,000 for staff II, and $95,000-125,000 for senior level roles plus benefits.
