About the job
About us.
Kalmus Labs is building Remora - an AI-powered learning platform focused on turning books, documents, and information into something people can actually explore, understand, and remember.
Most AI products today optimize for speed and surface-level answers. We’re interested in something deeper: personalized learning, long-term context, adaptive interaction, memory systems, and AI that feels genuinely useful instead of disposable.
We’re building toward a system where reading becomes interactive, contextual, and emotionally engaging - not passive consumption.
Why this role is interesting.
This is not a “maintain CRUD APIs forever” backend role.
You’ll work directly on the systems that power:
- AI reasoning flows
- retrieval pipelines
- memory systems
- document intelligence
- agent behavior
- multi-document understanding
- adaptive learning interactions
You’ll help shape how the product fundamentally thinks and behaves.
We move fast, prototype aggressively, and iterate quickly. There’s very little corporate structure here - decisions happen fast, ideas get tested quickly, and strong contributors have real influence over the direction of the platform.
We’re currently pre-seed and actively preparing for fundraising and expansion.
What you’ll work on.
- Backend architecture for Remora’s AI platform
- LLM pipelines (RAG, embeddings, retrieval, prompt orchestration)
- Multi-document search and contextual memory systems
- APIs, infrastructure, and scalable backend services
- AI feature reliability, latency, and optimization
- AI-assisted personalization systems
- Integrations between frontend, AI systems, and document workflows
- Internal tooling and experimentation systems for rapid iteration
You’ll collaborate closely with:
- the founder
- frontend engineers
- AI/backend team
- product/design side
Minimal meetings. Fast communication. Real ownership.
You might be a fit if you…
- Enjoy solving difficult backend/system design problems
- Like building things from scratch instead of maintaining enterprise bureaucracy
- Care about product thinking — not just writing isolated code
- Are interested in AI infrastructure, agent systems, retrieval pipelines, or intelligent UX
- Can work independently and communicate clearly
- Like fast-moving startup environments with ambiguity and experimentation
Tech stack / areas.
Backend & Infra:
Node.js, Python, Express, FastAPI, Postgres, Redis, Docker, AWS/GCP, CI/CD, WebSockets
AI Stack:
LangChain, LlamaIndex, OpenAI, Anthropic, PGVector, Pinecone, embeddings, RAG pipelines, prompt systems
Nice to have:
- vector search experience
- AI infra experience
- scalable API architecture
- observability/performance tooling
- authentication/security systems
Culture.
- Human-first team
- No corporate theater
- Direct communication
- Flexible schedule (~10–20h/week initially)
- Remote-first
- Strong ownership and autonomy
- Real opportunity to grow with the company long-term
Compensation.
Equity-only for now (Pre-Seed stage)
4-year vesting / 1-year cliff
Target range:
~3%
As funding closes and the platform scales, the goal is to transition core contributors into paid long-term roles.
How to apply.
📩 Send:
Resume
GitHub / portfolio / projects
A few real sentences about what actually interests you in AI/backend systems
Please don’t send AI-generated essays or generic corporate cover letters. We care much more about how you think than polished buzzwords.
