About the job
Overview
You turn messy businesses into deployed systems.
Compound works with companies where the important work is scattered across spreadsheets, SaaS tools, tribal knowledge, inboxes, PDFs, databases, and people’s heads. Your job is to go into that environment, understand how the business actually runs, and help turn it into software.
This is not consulting. It is not solutions engineering. It is not writing requirements and throwing them over the wall.
You are an engineer who can sit with a CFO, controller, dispatcher, ops lead, or branch manager, understand the workflow, and then build the system that solves it. Sometimes that means writing production code. Sometimes it means mapping the business process. Sometimes it means debugging an integration, building a prototype overnight, or realizing the customer asked for the wrong thing.
What you own
You own the path from customer ambiguity to deployed product.
You will work directly with customers to understand workflows, identify high-value use cases, design systems, and ship production applications. You will translate field knowledge back into the platform so Compound gets better with every deployment.
You are responsible for making sure the thing works in the real world: data quality, user adoption, edge cases, integrations, evaluation, rollout, and the metric that tells us whether the system actually created value.
What you bring
You are a strong engineer with unusual business empathy.
You can write code, but you are not precious about staying behind the keyboard. You like being in the room where the messy problem is. You can build trust with operators, ask sharp questions, and translate what you learn into software.
You should be comfortable with full-stack engineering, LLM systems, data workflows, and production debugging. More importantly, you should be comfortable with ambiguity. The customer will not hand you a perfect spec. The business process will not be clean. The data will be worse than expected. You still find a way through.
Strong signals:
- Production engineering experience across frontend, backend, or data systems. React, Typescript, and Python.
- Experience working directly with customers or internal business stakeholders
- Ability to understand operational workflows quickly
- Comfort with LLM applications, agents, RAG, evals, or automation systems
- Strong written and verbal communication
- Bias toward shipping and field learning
- Calm under ambiguity
Not a fit if
You only want to build from a spec.
You dislike customer contact.
You need the problem to be perfectly defined before starting.
You think deployment is “someone else’s job.”
You are uncomfortable with travel, field work, or messy operational details.
Why this role is different
The best AI systems are not built in isolation. They are built by people who understand the business deeply enough to know what should be automated, what should be augmented, and what should be left alone.
As a Forward Deployed Engineer at Compound, you are both builder and translator. You are the person who turns a business problem into a system, and then turns what you learned in the field into product advantage.
How to Apply
Send us a short note and a few examples of what you have built.
We care much more about evidence than polish. The best applications usually include:
- A brief explanation of why Compound is interesting to you
- Links to products, projects, repos, demos, or writing you are proud of
- A short description of the hardest thing you have built
- Anything that shows how you think, ship, debug, or learn
You do not need a perfect resume. You do need to show that you can build, figure things out, and operate with unusual ownership.
