About the job

Joining the Metallus team means becoming part of a legacy that dates back over a century. We are an industry leader, manufacturing the cleanest steel in the world for companies in the industrial, aerospace and defense, automotive, and energy markets.

Medium Voltage Systems | Substations | Protection & Controls | Industrial Power at Scale

Relocation may be offered for this position

Why This Role Matters

At Metallus, electrical engineering isn’t a support function—it’s mission‑critical infrastructure. Our Canton campuses operate complex medium‑voltage power systems that directly enable the production of the cleanest steel in the world, serving aerospace, defense, automotive, industrial, and energy markets.

As Power Distribution Engineer Lead, you will be the technical authority for medium-voltage power distribution—owning system reliability, modernization, protection, power quality, and long‑term asset strategy across the site. This is a hands‑on, high‑impact role for an engineer who wants real ownership of large‑scale electrical systems, not just designs on paper.

What You’ll Own

You will lead the engineering, reliability, and evolution of Metallus’s medium‑voltage power distribution systems—from incoming utility interfaces and substations to protection schemes, SCADA, and plant-wide power quality.

  • Medium Voltage System Leadership

  • Serve as the site technical authority for MV power distribution, protection, coordination, and power quality.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex MV system issues impacting plant reliability and safety.

  • Lead root cause analysis and corrective actions for high‑impact electrical failures.

  • Asset Strategy & Modernization

  • Develop and execute the MV Asset Management Strategy for the Canton campuses, including:

  • Preventive and predictive maintenance programs

  • Equipment specifications and standards

  • Capital planning and system modernization

  • MV Equipment upgrades and life‑extension projects to ensure long‑term system reliability.

  • Troubleshoot and continuous support to all MV power distribution activities ensuring reliability, plan upgrades, improvements, and complete modernization efforts.

  • Projects & Capital Execution

  • Lead MV power distribution projects from concept through commissioning, with capital budgets ranging from thousands up to $5M.

  • Manage scope, schedule, budget, contractors, and technical quality.

  • Specify, review, and approve MV equipment purchases at the plant level.

  • Protection, Safety & Compliance

  • Act as plant lead for relay protection and coordination, including creating and modifying relay settings.

  • Serve as Corporate Arc Flash Lead, executing arc flash studies and mitigation projects using power system modeling tools.

  • Ensure compliance with industry and safety standards (NFPA 70, 70E, 70B, NETA MTS, IEEE).

  • Lead annual plant power outage planning and execution.

  • Utility & External Coordination

  • Coordinate with utilities and regional transmission authorities to ensure reliable incoming power.

  • Support electrical safety programs and training across the site.

  • Digital & Advanced Systems

  • Serve as Corporate Lead for Power Distribution SCADA systems.

  • Act as plant power quality lead, investigating disturbances and implementing mitigation solutions.

  • Continuous support for plant operations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology with at least 7 years of experience in project management, design, supervision, or power distribution systems/equipment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or Business with at least 5 years of experience in project management, design, supervision, or power distribution systems/equipment.
