Civil Engineering Manager

About the Role

Knott Laboratory is seeking a highly skilled Civil Engineering Manager to lead our Civil Engineering team through strong people management, technical excellence, and hands-on project support. This role combines leadership, mentorship, and deep technical expertise—ensuring our team delivers high‑quality work aligned with our values of Excellence, Integrity, Growth Mindset, Innovation, Teamwork, and Compassion.

The ideal candidate is a licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) with civil and geotechnical engineering experience, skilled at guiding engineers, managing workloads, setting standards, and serving as a technical advisor across projects.

Key Responsibilities

People Leadership

  • Serve as the direct manager for the Civil Engineering team, including Engineers, EITs, and project staff.

  • Provide continuous coaching, mentorship, and performance feedback.

  • Support career development, technical training, and growth opportunities.

  • Promote a positive, collaborative, values-driven team culture.

  • Oversee workload balance, staffing needs, resource planning, and team capacity.

Technical Expertise & Oversight

  • Act as the primary technical advisor for civil engineering methodologies, standards, and best practices for civil design and reconstruction projects for commercial and residential properties, land development, grading and drainage, expansive soil issues and retaining wall design.

  • Review, validate, and approve civil engineering analyses, calculations, and reports.

  • Provide specialized insight into geotechnical considerations, soil behavior, materials, and site evaluation.

  • Ensure technical deliverables meet company standards, industry codes, and regulatory requirements.

  • Troubleshoot complex engineering challenges and provide guidance to project teams.

Project & Operational Management

  • Oversee civil engineering project workflows to ensure quality, timeliness, and efficiency.

  • Monitor project milestones, budgets, and performance metrics.

  • Collaborate with Project Managers and cross‑functional teams on scoping, planning, and execution.

  • Support proposal development, client consultations, and technical presentations when needed.

Quality, Safety & Standards

  • Maintain and uphold Knott Lab’s quality and safety standards across all civil engineering work.

  • Develop and enhance technical procedures, templates, and workflows.

  • Promote continuous improvement with a growth mindset philosophy.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (Master’s preferred).

  • Active Professional Engineer (P.E.) license required.

  • 8+ years of civil engineering experience, including work in site design, grading, drainage, utilities, and/or transportation.

  • Geotechnical engineering experience (field evaluations, soil mechanics, foundation behavior, materials, etc.).

  • 2+ years of leadership experience—team lead, project lead, or people-management role.

  • Strong technical writing and analytical skills.

  • Proficiency with civil engineering software (e.g., Civil 3D).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in forensic engineering or litigation support environments.

  • Experience mentoring EITs and supporting P.E. licensure paths.

  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly to technical and non‑technical audiences.

  • Salary: $120,000-145,000, commensurate with experience and certifications

  • Job Type: Full Time

  • Work Remotely: Denver, CO (Hybrid)

  • Field Work/Project Site Visits: Up to 40% of the time
