Position Overview:
FR Conversions is seeking a highly skilled CAD/CAM Engineer to support the design, programming, and optimization of components manufactured in our in-house fabrication department. This role bridges engineering design, fabrication planning, and CAM programming, ensuring that sheet metal, aluminum, plastics, and structural components are accurately modeled, nested, and produced using our laser, CNC router, press brake, and related equipment.
This position supports both R&D and Production Engineering, contributing to product development, design for manufacturability, and continuous improvement of fabrication processes. This role sits at the center of Engineering and Fabrication in a vertically integrated, fast-paced manufacturing environment. You’ll collaborate closely with R&D, Engineering, and Fabrication teams to improve manufacturability, optimize nesting and programming strategies, and support the development of innovative conversion solutions.

Key Responsibilities:
CAD Design & Drafting
- Create and modify 2D and 3D models and assemblies for conversion components including brackets, floor systems, framing, sheet metal parts, aluminum extrusions, and custom hardware.
- Develop accurate fabrication drawings, including flat patterns, bend lines, tolerances, and GD&T where appropriate.
Validate designs for manufacturability, fit, and fabrication feasibility prior to release.
Collaborate with R&D and Engineering to ensure designs align with functional and installation requirements.
Maintain organized CAD data, revision history, naming conventions, and drawing libraries.
CAM Programming (RADAN, CNC Router, Laser, Press Brake)
- Generate, modify, and optimize CAM programs, nests, and toolpaths using RADAN and CNC router software.
- Post-process and prepare G-code for laser cutting, routing, machining, and bending operations.
- Optimize nesting for material utilization, machine time, and throughput.
- Maintain and update tooling libraries, bend allowance tables, cutter offsets, and post-processor configurations.
- Validate machining simulations prior to releasing files to production.
Fabrication & Shop-Floor Support
- Partner with fabrication and machining operators to troubleshoot programs, toolpaths, fit issues, or cut quality concerns.
- Support prototype runs, first-article inspections, and process validation.
- Update programs based on shop feedback to improve reliability, accuracy, and material flow.
- Support press brake operations by providing bend sequence instructions, tooling recommendations, and setup guidance.
Engineering & Product Support
- Participate in new product development by contributing manufacturable designs and prototypes.
- Improve design standards for sheet metal, welded assemblies, brackets, and floor systems.
- Provide technical input during design reviews, feasibility assessments, and engineering changes.
- Assist in establishing CAD/CAM best practices, templates, and file structures across the department.
Process Improvement & ERP Integration
- Support integration between RADAN, CAD systems, and Genius ERP for part management and routing.
- Standardize file naming, revision control, and routing steps.
- Identify opportunities to streamline fabrication workflows, reduce cycle time, and improve consistency.
Salary & Compensation:
This is a full-time, salaried position with competitive compensation based on experience and qualifications. All salary and compensation packages at FR Conversions are subject to applicable labor laws, FR Conversions standard company policies, and payroll regulations, including taxes and withholdings.
Job Categorization:
This position is a full-time, salaried, FLSA exempt role (SOC Code – 17-2141).
This position is designated as a Safety Sensitive position.

Qualifications
Requirements & Qualifications:
Education & Experience
- Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Design, or related discipline preferred.
- 2+ years of experience in CAD design, CAM programming, or manufacturing engineering (automotive, sheet metal, fabrication, or machining environments highly preferred).
- Experience with lasers, CNC routers, press brakes, or sheet metal manufacturing required.
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in SolidWorks preferred.
- Advanced experience with RADAN or equivalent nesting/CAM software.
- Understanding of sheet metal best practices, bend allowances, tooling selection, and fabrication constraints.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, GD&T, weld symbols, and manufacturing documentation.
- Understanding of CNC machinery, tooling, machine offsets, and cut parameters.
- Ability to troubleshoot cut quality, nesting efficiency, tool issues, and fabrication fit.

- Excellent communication skills when working across Engineering, R&D, Fabrication, and Production.

Physical & Environmental Requirements
- Ability to work in fabrication, R&D, and production environments as needed.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, or lift up to 50 pounds during prototype or shop-floor support.
- Work occasionally in tight areas inside or around vehicles.
- Use of PPE, including safety glasses, steel-toe shoes, and hearing protection, may be required.
