Description

Position Overview:

The Automotive Electrical Engineer leads the design, development, and implementation of vehicle electrical systems and wire harness assemblies for FR Conversions’ line of mobility and specialty vehicle upfits. This position combines hands-on diagnostic expertise with advanced electrical design, ensuring that every conversion meets the highest standards of performance, reliability, and safety.

The engineer will be deeply involved in the entire product lifecycle, from initial concept, schematic design, and prototype testing through production launch and continuous improvement. Success in this role requires a balance of engineering precision, practical problem-solving, and collaboration with production, quality, purchasing, fabrication, and service teams to ensure electrical systems are efficient, manufacturable, compliant, and service-ready.

Why Join FR Conversions?

At FR Conversions, we don’t just modify vehicles. We engineer mobility, freedom, and independence for the people and communities who rely on them. As an Automotive Electrical Engineer, you will be at the center of designing the electrical systems that make our vehicles safe, reliable, and functional for everyday use. Your work directly impacts how our conversions interface with OEM platforms and how customers experience the mobility solutions they depend on.

This is a hands-on engineering role in a vertically integrated, fast-growing manufacturing environment. Here, you’ll see your electrical designs move from concept to schematic to prototype to full production, all under one roof. You’ll collaborate daily with R&D, Production, Quality, and Fabrication teams to integrate new systems, solve real-world electrical challenges, and improve product performance across our entire vehicle lineup.

If you’re looking for a place where your electrical engineering skills, diagnostic expertise, and technical creativity directly influence safety, quality, and customer lives, FR Conversions is where your work truly makes a difference.

Key Responsibilities:

Electrical Design & Development

  • Design and develop electrical systems and custom wire harnesses for new and existing vehicle conversion platforms.
  • Create, modify, and maintain electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and system layouts to integrate mobility equipment such as lifts, ramps, HVAC systems, lighting, and auxiliary controls.
  • Develop and document fuse, relay, and circuit protection strategies to ensure system safety and reliability.
  • Ensure all designs comply with OEM specifications, SAE standards, and FMVSS regulatory requirements.

System Integration & Testing

  • Evaluate and integrate electrical systems into OEM chassis architecture, including CAN bus communication and other vehicle networks.
  • Conduct bench- and vehicle-level testing to verify electrical performance, EMI/EMC compliance, and durability.
  • Support prototype builds by validating design intent, conducting functional tests, and documenting findings.
  • Develop and oversee test plans, performance metrics, and validation procedures for new systems.

Diagnostics, Troubleshooting & Support

  • Perform advanced diagnostics on vehicle electrical systems to identify root causes of performance issues or failures.
  • Support production and service teams with troubleshooting, failure analysis, and corrective actions.
  • Train technicians and production staff in proper diagnostic methods, testing procedures, and safe handling of electrical systems.
  • Create and maintain electrical troubleshooting guides and diagnostic documentation for internal use.

Cross-Functional Collaboration & Continuous Improvement

  • Partner with mechanical and manufacturing engineers to ensure electrical systems align with production capabilities and assembly processes.
  • Collaborate with Purchasing to evaluate suppliers, components, and new technologies that improve cost, reliability, and ease of assembly.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to streamline harness production, standardize components, and reduce field issues.
  • Participate in design reviews and contribute to the evolution of FR’s product and process standards.

Documentation & Compliance

  • Prepare engineering drawings, specifications, bills of materials (BOMs), and engineering change notices (ECNs).
  • Maintain organized project documentation and revision control.
  • Ensure all electrical designs comply with company safety standards, regulatory mandates, and customer expectations.

Salary & Compensation:

This is a full-time, salaried position with competitive compensation based on experience and qualifications. All salary and compensation packages at FR Conversions are subject to applicable labor laws, FR Conversions standard company policies, and payroll regulations, including taxes and withholdings.

Job Categorization:

  • Proven experience with OEM vehicle electrical systems, CAN bus communication, and diagnostic tools such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, scan tools, and breakout boxes.
  • Familiarity with electrical design software such as AutoCAD Electrical, SolidWorks Electrical, or equivalent tools.
  • Understanding of automotive electrical standards (SAE, ISO, FMVSS) and best practices for wiring, routing, and circuit protection.
  • Experience supporting low-volume or specialty vehicle manufacturing is preferred.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong understanding of vehicle network communication (CAN, LIN, Ethernet) and diagnostic protocols.
  • Excellent analytical and troubleshooting skills, with a methodical approach to electrical testing and validation.
  • Strong project management and documentation skills; ability to juggle multiple priorities.
  • Exceptional collaboration and communication across departments.
  • Proactive, hands-on problem solver with high attention to detail and craftsmanship.
