At Durin, we drill for mineral exploration companies. Despite being a $6B industry, exploration drilling technology has hardly changed in over 60 years. Our mission is to change that. The first step is retrofitting drilling rigs with automated controls and real-time data streams to increase speed, efficiency, and reliability—quickly followed by the production of our own equipment.

Building the Rig

We are hiring an electrical engineer to spearhead the design of electrical systems, including sensors, power distribution, and controls. You will iterate quickly and collaborate closely with mechanical and software engineers, testing hardware in the field daily or weekly.

Note: You don't need mining or drilling experience to excel in this role.

Objectives:

• Design, develop, and implement communication procedures, sensors, power systems, and wiring for autonomous drilling rigs
• Work closely with mechanical engineers to integrate electrical components with other subsystems
• Optimize sensors and power systems to ensure reliability in rugged field conditions
• Develop, update, and maintain electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and specifications for prototyping and manufacturing
• Perform testing, troubleshooting, and validation of electrical systems and components in both lab and field environments
• Select and specify electrical components such as sensors, actuators, cables, connectors, and circuit protection devices suitable for harsh operational conditions
• Support field testing and diagnostics, analyzing performance data to recommend improvements and upgrades

Competencies:

• Experience in electrical design, preferably in heavy machinery, drilling equipment, or autonomous systems
• Proficiency in electrical CAD software (e.g., KiCAD, EPLAN, or similar)
• Strong knowledge of power distribution systems, sensor technology, motor control, and automation
• Experience with communication protocols such as CAN bus, SPI, I2C, or Ethernet in industrial applications
• Familiarity with PLCs, HMIs, and embedded systems integration
• Experience using an oscilloscope, network analyzer, and other electrical tools
• Strong experience in signal processing techniques such as filtering and modulation for tasks like noise reduction, signal filtering, and data compression
• Ability to work in a fast-paced and collaborative environment to rapidly prototype and manufacture new products
• Experience with field testing and working in rugged environments

• Compensation

For this role everyone, including the founder, is taking a salary of $120,000. We believe in investing every dollar back into the company to achieve our ambitious goals. While money isn't our driving motivator, we ensure you will be taken care of financially.

We offer healthcare coverage (medical, dental, vision), all meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner) are covered when you’re at headquarters, and we can help provide housing close to the office. In addition, the headquarters is equipped with two bedrooms, a full kitchen, and a high-end shower.

You will be given generous equity.

Requirements

• Must be willing to work from our headquarters in El Segundo.
• Must be willing to work extended hours and weekends as needed.
